Resetting my engagement Ring to make Diamond look bigger?

I came across this site and although I'm not totally familiar with everything, it seems like just the place for me.

My husband and I recently celebrated our one year wedding anniversary; I did not see the proposal coming. We had casually talked about rings because a few of his friends were getting engaged/married. I sad I like something classic like a solitaire. Truth is, I never really took the time to look at engagement rings, or diamonds for that matter. I tell my husband all the time, that I never realized how much I LOVE diamonds until he proposed and I had one.

My engagement ring is 1.20ct and it was originally set in a thin rounded platinum band. When shopping for a wedding band I realized nothing sat symmetrically with my ring since my engagement ring band was rounded. In any event, I fell in love with a 2ct, three row small brilliant diamond band that I still love, but separately from my engagement ring. I was never happy with the way they looked together and wanted to change my engagement ring band to a flat one. Finally on our one year anniversary we went back to our jewelers and changed my band to a flat band where the prongs sit higher on the ring and small brilliant diamonds on the sides and it is now set in 14k white gold. I am much happier with the way it looks now; however.... I feel bad even saying it because I am truly blessed to have gotten anything at all, and I LOVE my diamond, but... I am seriously considering changing the setting of it to make it look bigger.

I'm 5'6'' and have long skinny fingers, so feel my engagement diamond pretty much gets lost in my hand and especially with my wedding band that is so thick. I've read articles and other threads where people suggest a halo, but my sister in-law has a princess cut halo diamond engagement ring and I don't want to "copy" her. Are there any other suggestions in ways I can set my original diamond to make it look bigger? Finally would you suggest changing my wedding band as well to something that better compliments? Please help!

LOL! Is that a magnifying glass on top?

OP, there's nothing you can do to make your diamond bigger. You set it higher, and it looks big from a top-down view, but looks smaller from the side profile view.. and well, is obvious it's sitting higher. You set it lower to make it look chunkier from a profile view, but then the top-down view it looks smaller. You make the band and shanks of the e-ring super thin and delicate to make the diamond contrast larger.. but truly you aren't fooling anyone. It's the proportions that make it look big.. and having the shank and whatnot proportional would be more important to me than shrinking everything to make the diamond look bigger.

Quite honestly, I agree your diamond gets lost in that band. If I were you, I'd stick with a simple WG or platinum thin band to wear with your e-ring, and wear the WB as a stand-alone for the days you don't feel like wearing your E-ring. Or maybe use the WB as a RHR? You *can* add a halo, if you'd like, or even get ring jackets to wear to get more finger coverage… but that's finger coverage, not making your diamond appear bigger. And if the halo isn't made well by a skilled bench, or made proportionally flattering, it'll just end up looking worse and more drowned out.

I'm all for extra bling and lots of finger coverage, as I am a self proclaimed Ms. Gaudy, but it's for finger coverage purposes, and not for pretending I have a larger diamond than I actually have at hand. Have you seen those invisible set cluster diamond rings? With the 4 or 6 princesses set together to look like one big diamond? It doesn't fool anyone.. None of the tricks fool anyone :cheeky:

Re: Resetting my engagement Ring to make Diamond look bigger

What about sidestones, like trillion, emerald or tapered baguettes? Would make the ring blingier, but def agree with last poster, to make your engagement ring stand out don't wear it with the three band diamond wedder...it gets lost, just a simple wedding band so the engagement ring is the highlight.

Re: Resetting my engagement Ring to make Diamond look bigger

If it were me, I would wear the wedding band on the right hand and find a dainty wedding band to wear with your solitaire setting.

Re: Resetting my engagement Ring to make Diamond look bigger

What a lovely ering and wedding band you have. You have a lot of bling on your finger.

But, as others have said, I wouldn't wear your rings together if you're looking to enhance the size of your diamond. I'd get a thin wedding band and wear it with the ering. On other days, I'd wear the triple diamond band alone on your left hand or as a RHR. Or you could wear the ering as a RHR. But definitely, not together.

Re: Resetting my engagement Ring to make Diamond look bigger

I agree with others, don't wear your ER with that WB. That wedding band is great for stand alone, your ER would look best with a band with a similar thickness to the shank of the ering. That would look great!

Re: Resetting my engagement Ring to make Diamond look bigger

"Finger coverage" and "looking bigger" can work out to roughly the same thing, sometimes. I love round settings with fishtail prongs - and, yeah, they do draw they eye out and fill in the four corners and make rounds look vaguely cushiony. They didn't call them "illusion settings" for nothing!

With a princess, I think the options are a little more limited. You can get a halo - which does tend to make things look a little bigger even aside from the halo, because it draws the eye outward (there is a thread you should be able to search for where people posted before-and-after shots for examples). Me, I'd vote for putting it in a chunky platinum bezel on a plain band, because it accomplishes much the same effect, but without the fuss of a halo. Pair it with a plain band, and you have a 24/7 set and can either keep that beautiful band for special occasions, or wear it on the other hand ....

P.S. - Attaching a pic of the sort of thing I was thinking of: found this one in one of the older Leon Mege threads!

Thank you everyone for the great ideas and taking the time to respond! Stay tuned... Going to our jeweler probably next Tuesday to talk about different ideas of what we can do. I'll post pictures of some of the options to get your opinion. Also, would I start a different thread for my resetting options or would I respond here?

I agree with my wedding band more of a stand along kind of ring. I love it, and realize I fell in love with it individually as opposed to it complimenting my engagement ring.

Just respond here, BC :) It gets messy when posters start new threads on the same subject.

Here is the thread Circe was referring to:

You can see a lot of what I mean in there.. some halos really also drown out the center stone, and IMO, yes, get great finger coverage, but makes the diamond look smaller in comparison to the melee stones.

Here is a PS article to combat Diamond Shrinkage Syndrome ;))

Perhaps they also sell upgrades for anniversaries, which are higher-power magnifying lenses.
You propose with a 10x.
Then when you are in a better financial position you can trade in the 10x lens for full credit on a 20x, and so on.

LOLzzzzz!!! Too funny!

Re: Resetting my engagement Ring to make Diamond look bigger

I know you said you don't want to copy your SIL, but halos really popular and for good reason, they do make a diamond look larger. Jeans and huggie earings are popular too and I certainly would wear them even if my SIL has them. :wink2:

If a halo is definitely out of the question, I love the look of a bezel that has a bit of detail around the diamond. I've been looking at doing this myself. I'll see if I can find some links.

Re: Resetting my engagement Ring to make Diamond look bigger

I think your wedding band is competing too much.

As for halos. You can try a baguette halo. It would look very different from your SIL's ring.

You can also do a colored halo. Like a yellow diamond or a pink diamond halo. http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQoM53w5FkvcgGnYfztGLYrPj88hdt-Iz2ZwdrXT2mxqW3nfoaW or this: http://www.beverleyk.com/semi-mounts/8wr239-a-rf-d-d-m.html

You can do something like this too: http://www.beverleyk.com/semi-mounts/8wr289-a-d-r-m.html

I am looking for settings for same reason, but will prob end up keeping the same unless I find something ah maze ing.

I found these settings I think you will like; and the PRICE IS RIGHT! Great prices, more finger coverage and interest in the setting, better than your SIL's probably IMO~

Re: Resetting my engagement Ring to make Diamond look bigger

Yes the second link by iluvdiamonds2 is the trilliants i was thinking of, I cant post pictures off my phone though. but with a princess cut and a trillion on either side it would look pretty amazing. there are some images of princess with trillions just on google by whiteflash and they look great. sry can't post any.

Re: Resetting my engagement Ring to make Diamond look bigger

One option - get two eternity bands that match the shank on your e-ring, and wear one on either side of your e-ring. You'd get the "big band" look without the band competing with your e-ring.

thanks so much everyone for the great suggestions!!!
iluvdiamonds2- I love the second link you sent me. For a three stone it compliments the center stone really well while overall getting more finger coverage!

I've decided to go to our jewelers tomorrow afternoon, I can't wait to report back to you guys and see what you think!

Thanks!

Re: Resetting my engagement Ring to make Diamond look bigger

I think your wedding band on your right hand would look lovely!

Re: Resetting my engagement Ring to make Diamond look bigger

Went to the jewelers yesterday!

Sadly I was a bit disappointed. I was expecting to see more choices that I loved. I found two wedding bands that I like, I like round, 2ct. diamond eternity band best. I'm concerned that the setting/band for my e-ring that I liked with my favorite wedding band might be too big for my 1.2ct. engagement diamond. What are your thoughts?

Can't wait to hear back from you!

Re: Resetting my engagement Ring to make Diamond look bigger

I think your new choice is kind of the same concept as your original dilemma  What if you were to do as everyone else suggested (and wear your beautiful 3 row band on your right hand) and leave your original engagement ring setting and perhaps get a set of ring guards in ( ex. sapphire and diamonds, all diamonds, etc) for you to wear one on each side. I did that with my original ER and it made it look so much bigger. The stacking look!

Re: Resetting my engagement Ring to make Diamond look bigger

I agree with Emeraldcutlover. This ring is basically like your current wedding band. I really like VRBeauty's idea of getting 2 thin diamond bands to go on either side of your e-ring. I really like BGD's Dream Band. It's dainty and still blingy. In fact, I think there's one available in our Preloved forum
