I have a just over 1ct pear diamond in a knife edge band.
I wanted a halo at the time but could not afford it.

I am wondering if I can purchase a prelude setting with a halo and have a jeweller put the stone In for me or does the fact that I want a halo mean I need to have it made by hand?

If someone could advise also what sites have reasonably priced settings it would be great

Do you know your stone measurements? You can get a stock semimounting if you have those. With a halo, there may be a small airline you can see, depending on the mounting and your stone, but it is definitely doable.

Stuller has a large catalog of mountings and you can look at those online. I don't know if Australian jewelers use that brand though? Another place to look is James Allen. I think they will sell just the setting and you can order online. I think Blue Nile will do the same. You would just need your stone set locally then, but you will want to make sure that the jeweler will do it. Some don't want to set a stone that's not theirs with a mounting that's not theirs. But if you get the setting from them, it's usually a non issue. But I would see first if a local person would work with an outside setting first.

If you have a report of your diamond, it should have all the measurements to look and see what mountings may fit best.

Where are you located?

James Allen sets outside stones. They will put it in the size that matches your stone closest (like @elizat said). I believe they charge $100 to
set an outside stone and if its over 7mm they charge another $100 for that (at least that's what I had to pay).

that's good to know! I did not know they would set an outside stone- kind of surprised me for a large company!

My concern with a stock/preloved halo for a pear would first be the actual outline of the stone not matching up with the outline shape of the halo. LxW isn’t everything. But this depends on how picky you may be?
Some halo designs are more forgiving in this aspect then others, in my opinion.

Thank you very much for the responses.

I have awhile to wait until I can afford to do it but will look at the sites you recommend and when jewellery makers are open again I will compare their pricing against online

I would love to give the work to a local
Jeweller but in the past have found it extremely expensive.
