My mom''s friend has an heirloom ring that she''s entrusted to me to have reset. The setting is pretty weak (and too big for her) and she wants to wear it, and eventually, years later, pass it down to her son to give to his wife. It''s a very pretty setting and I could use help in finding something similar, or a little different. Something besides just a standard 4 or 6 prong setting.

She wants it to be white gold, a solitaire and under $500, size 4. I know the ring is old - her husband''s grandmother passed it down to her so definitely over 50 years, though maybe a bit more.

Also any guesses on the diamond cut? As for size, it looks like it might be about 0.50 ct? It was pretty dirty when I got it, so first thing I did was pop it into my US cleaner last night.

Thanks all! Here are some pics of it:

Does she want another illusion type setting? It will look much smaller when it comes out of that mounting. What about a halo - would she be interested in something like that?

She doesn''t have a preference. She''s fine with both illusion and non-illusion as long as it''s a simple clean look and white gold. She doesn''t want a halo.

Thanks! That''s really pretty. Only, that one looks like it comes with a centerstone? I like the Vatche Royal Empress on the same site, but it is way too expensive

Some people have found servicable semi-mounts from lord of gem rings on ebay.
Here''s one for $129 + sizing and shippping.
If you''re on a tight budget, you might be able to get one and have it set locally. Here''s a fancier one.
I''ve never purchased from them myself and I''m not sure of the quality of their melee.

I''m assuming that if your diamond is .5 ct then it''s probably about 5mm across.

You should also look at Unique Settings of New York. Any jeweler can order mounts from them,

Thanks! I actually have quite a few LOGR settings and the melee is pretty nice (esp if you upgrade the diamonds). I''m staying away from LOGR for this project because my mom''s friend doesn''t want side diamonds, melee or halos - and for simple solitaires, I''m not a big fan of LOGR.

Will do, thanks! I''ll also take a look at Stuller.
