HI-

That EW leon ring you posted is mine and it might help you to decide to know the reasons WHY I went with that design. First of all, it is a tanzanite and not a traditional blue stone like sapphire so i wanted to do a less traditional setting. Plus- I knew I wanted TRAP side stones and the ones that looked best when the tanzanite was set N-S were much larger and way more expensive. Tanzanite is too soft to wear daily so i did not want to spend so much money on the side stones.

Now... if I were setting a EC DIAMOND like yours... I probably would go with the tapered bagettes, or traps. Leon took pictures of several different sizes/ price options for side stones and sent these to me to choose. There might be a significant difference in cost of these different cut side stones (Traps vs bagettes) for you so regardless of who you choose to reset... I would get price quotes for sides from both.

I am doing my first project with Maytal now and do not yet have the finished product- she is making me a shared prong eternity band similar to Tiffanys style. I agree she is very easy to work with... but do not shy away from Leon if you want those delicate claw prongs and his expertise choosing well proportioned sides. Classic 3 stone rings seem to be his forte and his side stones are very well cut and well priced.

Good luck!

Wow, that''s all incredibly helpful info. Thanks!

First, I love your ring!! It turned out beautifully and I think it looks great set E-W.

I think I''ve decided for certain that I want to set my stone N-S and go for a very traditional look. One of the reasons I''m going with the baguettes is that it''s a good way to get a 3 stone look without spending a ton of money on the sidestones. I''d love to do emerald cuts on the sides, but that would be very expensive.

I can''t wait to see your Maytal piece. When will it be done?

I hope my ring will be finished in just a few more weeks! 12 pointer shared prong RB eternity set low exactly like the ones at tiffanys with the open basket on sides- not the u shape style. To me the tiffanys one was the most refined and comfortable. Leon does this exact same style, but I went with Maytal because I wanted to get to know local jewelers.

I understand the love of the EC 3 stone... but tapered bagettes are probably the most cost-effective. What size is your ring finger? I would go for shorter/ wider, or more tapered bagettes rather than ones that might look to long and skinny.

I can''t wait to see your new ring! That is my very favorite style, but it is very hard to pay the price of the Tiffany one. Your tanzanite ring is just gorgeous, too!

Can''t wait to see your eternity band. It sounds like it will be stunning and you will be the first PSer to have a classic Maytal design.

Finding a local jeweler is one of the reasons I want to use Maytal. I live in the Pacific Northwest now, but I am from LA and still spend quite a lot of time there visiting my family. The idea of having an excellent custom jeweler nearby is very appealing. I just wish I could see some samples of her simple 3-stone designs. She really is so nice and fun to talk to.

I wear a size 6. I agree that shorter and wider baguettes would look best, especially since my stone is on the longer side.

I love this Leon. Granted, it''s a round, but it''s just so elegant and refined. Doesn''t hurt that the center is 7 cts!

And here''s another huge stone with very wide tapered baguettes. Somehow this ring doesn''t work for me as much as the round version does. I think I actually prefer single prongs.

I think the second one has larger sides in proportion to the stone in contrast to the round. I''d tell him you want thinner baguettes.

Hmm, I guess you''re right. Maybe I prefer longer, thinner baguettes. I wouldn''t have thought so, but maybe it makes the center appear larger? I definitely want as much finger coverage as possible.

I love how he doesn''t use that bar when setting the baguettes the way so many jewelers do. I also love that shank on the round. Truly stunning!

That''s a gorgeous ring and a gorgeous stone! Wow, I wonder how big it is? Thanks for the link.

I think the main thing is it is hard to tell what you are looking at when comparing those rings with 7 ct honkers compared to a normal 1.5 ct stone like your own. With those super wide EC cuts... the bagettes get shortened because there is only so much surface area before the ring has to wrap around your finger!

I love that RB with the skinny sides, but that stone is so big... maybe anything would look skinny and that is why in some cases leon puts TWO bagettes on each side for a wider look. Like this...

If you can''t go to a store and try on similar styles with your size stone... you can always try to cut out a piece of paper and place on your finger.

Well, I think I''ve made a decision. I''m sending my stone off either today or tomorrow and I''m 99% certain it''s going to......Maytal! As much as I love the pics on Leon''s site, I feel like Maytal is a better fit for me. It''s a bit scary because I don''t have pictures of rings she''s done exactly like the one I''m having her make, but the consensus from people who have used her is that she does impeccable work. She really seems to understand what I''m wanting and seems confident in her ability to deliver. She''s also one of the nicest, most genuine people I''ve ever met in the jewelry industry and I have no doubt that if something weren''t right, she would do her best to correct it. It''s also a huge bonus that she''s in LA. I would like to have a thin baguette wedding band made to go with this ring, so, if all goes well, she can do that for me at some point as well. So, keep your fingers crossed and I''ll be posting the results in a couple of months! In the meantime, I can''t wait to see Green With Envy''s classic eternity band!

A quick design question: Do you guys like the way Leon uses claw prongs at the juncture of the baguette and center stone rather than using a bar (as seen in the picture above with the huge round)? Maytal said she can do either.

YAY!! How exciting! I can''t wait to see it ! I''m sure it will turn out beautiful!

I am so glad you started this thread. If I ever reset or upgrade I''ve often thought of using Maytal or Leon. I adore Leon''s prongs, but, live in South OC so Maytal is close. I am looking forward to seeing how your ring turns out. Your stone is beautiful, by the way!

I like the prongs between the stones.

Congrats on your decision! The only way I would know for sure about your question is to wear the ring for a month to decide!

But, I think I might like the prongs. Sometimes, depending on how they are situated, the bar there bugs me just a tiny bit. (probably only when there''s not a nice transition between the center stone & bar, like when there are 6 prongs, OR, when you can see the bar when you look down from the top. Maybe I will attach a picture of what I mean - it''s hard to see and very subtle, but I remember it just slightly bugged me that you could see the bar to the sides of the center stone. But those are probably the only reasons it would bother me at all.)

I think you have made a good decision! And it certainly will benefit us to have an example of another style of ring from Maytal! I can''t wait to see Green''s band either!

My vote is for the bars. I have always adored the classic Harry Winston solitaire with baguettes, and I am pretty sure they use the bars.

ditto on both of the above points

I also like the bars as long as they are not too thick....

After reading the last few posts I am sort of leaning toward bars myself. They do seem more classic, and you said you like classic.

Thanks, guys! I am leaning towards bars myself. Maytal said she would give me her opinion which would look best once my stone arrives and she puts it next to the baguettes. I''m also a little unsure whether to go for single or double claw prongs. I like the look of double claws from the side, but prefer singles from the top. My stone isn''t huge, so I''m thinking doubles might be overwhelming.

DS - Yes, I agree that it will be helpful to have an example of another style of Maytal''s work around here. I wish there was already one floating around as it would have made my decision much easier. I''m still second-guessing myself a bit, especially the more I see pics of Leon''s work. Oh well, something was telling me to choose Maytal, so hopefully it will pay off in the end.

Hi Demelza,
I am so excited to see your reset! I think Maytal''s work is exquisite and would love to see someone on the west coast execute a knock-out classic solitaire. I gather from some of the SMTR threads Leon is overdue for an attitude adjustment, which is such a shame. Anyhoo, your EC is breathtaking and I can''t wait to see it. Re: prongs vs. bars: I vote for the one that shows the least amount of metal, but I do love split claw prongs on rectangular stones.

Thanks, Pixley! I just wanted to say that I LOVE your stone! It''s really gorgeous and I love the setting too. Oh, and I just saw that you said you moved from California to BC -- me too!

Aww, thanks! I''m so surprised to hear that you''re in BC - I thought you were in LA. We must be the only PSrs in BC. Don''t cha miss the sun? Not to worry, once your ring is reset it''ll be radiating beams of light back at you.

I''m from LA and lived there most of my life. I still spend a lot of time there, especially since having my daughter. We go down every couple of months and spend a few weeks at a time. That''s why having a good jeweler in LA would be very helpful. Maytal said she''ll have my ring ready for my trip in July!

As for the sunshine, I actually don''t miss it at all. I LOVE Pacific Northwest weather -- love the grey, love the rain, love the cold. I''m really happy that it''s June and still in the 50''s. Yup, most people think I''m nuts, but I think I had enough sun in LA to last a lifetime! I take it you don''t love the weather here? I think I read you''re in Victoria. Is the weather there similar to Vancouver?

Oh you are so lucky to get to go back as often as you do! I have family in SF, Santa Cruz and Topanga Canyon (in-laws) so we alternate between no-cal and so-cal a few times each year. I definitely appreciate the clean air and lack of traffic when I return to Victoria, but the gray skies - ick. I WISH I liked them more.

Sounds like we will both be getting rings from LA in July! YAY to that! Can''t wait.

That''s funny -- my husband''s family is from the Bay Area! We''ll actually be there in August.

You''re getting that EC band from Singlestone, right? Can''t wait to see pics! Will you have it sent to BC? That''s the one thing I absolutely hate about living in Canada -- shipping is such a pain!

Oh, sooo not having it shipped here - no whaaaayee. I''ll have it shipped to my family or a friend before they fly up in July. SS isn''t charging sales tax either, given its final destination. Love them!

So cute that you are a nor/so-cal couple living in BC. I think it''s a perfect and balanced combination!

I can''t wait to see your ring. I would love to have one myself, but I know they''re a limited production item and might not be around by the time I can buy one. Sigh. Take lots of pics please!

Okay, so I decided to go with the bars between the center stone and the baguette. Harry Winston actually uses prongs (like Leon), but Maytal thought it would look best to use a very thin, delicate bar and I think I will defer to her expertise. She said I would see it just a bit when looking at the stone from the top down and that worries me a bit, but, again, she''s the expert and really thought the bar would be the appropriate choice for an emerald cut.

Any opinions on single vs double claws? I''m leaning towards singles since my stone is only a 1.5 ct, but I''d love to hear what you guys think.

I''m biased but I love love love double claws on square/rectangle/cushion stones :)

Hi Demelza,

I recently had my EC Aquamarine recut to a square Emerald, and Leon set it. I left the number of claws up to him, and he went with single. I think it fits the stone perfectly, and it''s almost three carats. The thing is, on EC stones, the corners are usually much more narrow than on an Asscher, which can definitely handle double. I''d personally do single if it were me. Did Maytal give her opinion?
