Reset -- Who to use?

Any opinions on single vs double claws? I''m leaning towards singles since my stone is only a 1.5 ct, but I''d love to hear what you guys think.

I recently had my EC Aquamarine recut to a square Emerald, and Leon set it. I left the number of claws up to him, and he went with single. I think it fits the stone perfectly, and it''s almost three carats. The thing is, on EC stones, the corners are usually much more narrow than on an Asscher, which can definitely handle double. I''d personally do single if it were me. Did Maytal give her opinion?

I think I am very stronly leaning towards single. The more I look around, the more I realize that I''m not crazy about double prongs on square/rectangle stones. I prefer them on rounds and cushions and only when the stone is fairly sizable. Thanks for chiming in!

Another vote for single claw prongs. Not that I don''t LOVELOVELOVE double claws, and hope to own something with those one day! But for this piece, this project... hmmmmmm...single prongs just seems to be speaking to me!

Oh crud! Just when I thought I had every last detail figured out, I have to see a ring that has me questioning everything! I really need to stop looking at jewelry on the internet.

Does anyone prefer this design to the EC/baguette design? The EC in this pic has almost exactly the same measurements as mine.

ETA Hmmm, after looking at it a bit, I'm starting to wonder if it looks too much like all the stones are crowded onto the top portion of the ring. Know what I mean?

I''m not mrss, but I agree with her. While I think both designs are pretty, I''m almost always for giving a nice stone center stage, which the design you want will do. It''s such a classic, beautiful setting.

Ellen expressed my thoughts. I just think what you are doing really is a time tested classic keeping the center stone the focus. the *new* ring is very pretty too and I''ve not seen that combo in person but I don''t know exactly why, I just like the other design better

I agree w/ Ellen & mrssalvo. I would go with the classic & timeless baguettes, & keeping center stone center stage. I have seen 3-stone emerald cut rings that are gorgeous, but the one you posted above isn''t grabbing me so much (you were right about " it looks too much like all the stones are crowded onto the top portion of the ring. "). I''d stick with what you were thinking, and also I vote for single claw prongs.

Also you''re right about PS being a very, very bad thing for mental health.

Wanted to update this thread: I picked up my ring from Maytal this afternoon. It's really beautiful. I was actually shocked by how delicate and refined it is (makes my Michael B look like a monster!). The proportions are perfect and the finish is really finely done. It has a surprisingly low profile too -- good for life with a toddler!

The bad news is that the ring I bought on consignment at Pearlman's does not look right with the Maytal ring. It's a bit too thick and bulky. Also, I asked Maytal to evaluate the workmanship of the band and she said it was your average cast piece, probably made overseas. She said there were more than a few stones not set correctly and that it was likely not a result of wear. She did say it was a good deal, but I was reminded of MrsS's tagline and decided to return it.

I would like to wear a band with the Maytal ring and found that my Michael B Wisp band has the right proporitions, but I'm not sure it works very well otherwise. I would love to find a super thin step-cut band with a very low profile -- basically a Wisp band with step-cuts. Anyone know of anything like this?

Two things to keep in mind. Step cuts are generally much deeper than RB's ... and they don't even CUT asschers as super tiny as they do RBs. Two reasons the asscher or square emerald eternity bands you find are bulkier. I don't think I've seen any step cut band anywhere CLOSE to the proportions of the wisp band ... and I have a hunch its because it would be impossible to achieve. If you find one though, let us in on the vendor. Folks would be LINING UP for it. And I'd take a number to stand in that line myself.

ETA: French cut baguettes might coordinate though ... they do cut teensy tiny bags. I think Kristydarling purchased a delicate band like that from Doyle maybe? Lang? Can't recall.

This is an excellent suggestion! Couldn't Maytal make a band for this ring since she made the ring?

Thanks for the responses. I thought about asking Maytal to make me a ring (and I might), but she is not cheap and I wanted to see if I could find one I liked already made up. It might very well be that I won''t be able to find a step-cut ring with same tiny dimensions as my Wisp band. I did contact Doyle & Doyle to see if they happened to have one of those french cut bands already made in my size -- they do! I''m waiting to hear back about the depth measurement. I''m not wild about milgrain, but KD commented in her thread that it was very subtle. The other problem is that it''s $1,800 for a mere .35 points. Does that seem insane to anyone but me?

She mentioned she was making a similar ring for another PSer. I figured it was you.

Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be able to post pics until mid-August as I'm out of town and don't have the right software to download pics off my camera. I'll see if I can find some way around this.

I'm not sure how to advise you. The profile on my ring is very, very low. I like it, but it does make finding a band to go with it a bit trickier. I don't know how important that is to you -- this isn't my actual engagement ring, so it matters less to me. What about a compromise -- ask her to make the ring a bit higher than mine, but lower than the Tiffany's? What size finger does your girlfriend have?

Oh my, I''m in love! I went to 23rd Street Jewelers today and they had what I assume is the same band KD tried on at Dianne''s -- 35 points of french cut diamonds with the very finest milgrain edge (you could hardly tell). It was very dainty and looks AMAZING with my ring!!!! The regular price there was (are you sitting down?) $3,250. They said it was "on sale" for $2,200. Do you guys think the Doyle & Doyle band is likely the same one? If so, it makes sense to buy it there, but I wonder if I told 23rd Street about Doyle''s price whether they would price match. Do you think it''s worth at try? I would prefer to buy locally in case something goes wrong. That said, what kind of insanity is it to buy a 35 point band at $1,800!?!

Im not surprsied at the price, considering its 23rd St ....I have heard they are very pricey. I would definitely try to see if they would price match if its turns out that D&D sells the same ring for significantly less. It never hurts to try!

As far as the price of the band, I cant say anything...we paid SO MUCH for my Tiff Novo band considering its tcw. Like you, I was having such a hard time finding a w-band to go with my e-ring (I was even considering a re-set-remember?), but once I tried on the Novo, I knew I had to have it, even considering the price. MH bought it for me and I totally love it and dont regret getting it a bit! So, just think about it!!! It may be worth it to you in the end to have a band that goes perfectly with your new ring!!

Thanks for your input. It really does seem to be the same ring KD liked, but I''m not sure how I would find out for sure. There can''t be THAT many french cut eternity bands out there, right?

I really think this is the right ring and prices are only going to go up, I would imagine. It''s just hard to stomach spending that much on a ring with such little diamond and platinum weight. It''s good to hear you don''t regret your Novo purchase. I doubt I''ll regret this one either...once I get over the sticker shock.

Huh? What piece did Maytal "copy"? If you're referring to the Tiffany's ring, I'm not really sure I understand your point. Leon himself has "copied" that design many times (as has virtually every jeweler on this planet). An emerald cut center with tapered baguettes on either side is hardly unique to Tiffany's. I don't claim to know who did it first, but there's a very good chance it wasn't Tiffany's. Am I missing something?

As for the band - could you call Doyle and Doyle''s on Monday and 23rd Street (

) and get the dimensions of each ring? I guess it wouldn''t tell you much about the craftsmanship difference between the two, but at least you''d know if they are of comparable size, which is key when you''re considering pairing it with a low setting.

I wish you could''ve done a photo shoot at 23rd Street - their stuff is pure fantasy.

I say the other band doesn''t matter. If this band looked that great with the ring, go for it. You won''t find many like it, you loved it, it is local - I say go for it! Can''t be that big of a price difference between them and what the hay? If you look down and LOVE it everytime you wear it then you''ve scored big time!
