reselling an engagement ring

I am looking to sell an engagement ring (didn't work unfortunately) and was wondering if anyone had an opinion as to how much I should be looking to receive. Retail stores, online and physical, for very similar stones are asking at least $9000. Am I looking at $7000 plus the value on melting down the platinum band?

If you got it from Costco return it. If you didn't, consign it through Pearlmans or GOG. They will advise you on what you can list it for and how much you can expect to get. Consignment is up to 40% in my area, so Pearlmans and GOG are offering good consignment rates.

And no, I don't think you should go into it thinking you will get 7K for it back plus melt. Although you may get really lucky as it is a good size, color and clarity and might move quickly. And if the setting is a desirable style you may be able to get more for it whole than you would at melt.

Also try JamesAllen.com, I recently sold my diamond to them and they offered me a great price, not much lower than what my DH paid originally for it. I upgraded to another stone from James Allen, but had I not, they would have still sent me my cheque for my stone that I sold them.

Consignment jewelrs typically charge about 15-30% of the selling price depending on what sorts of services they are offering. That's likely to be a popular item but make sure you check out who you're going into business with on these deals. It does you no good if they ask a lot and work for a cheap commission if they don't get their price or if they don't pay their bills. Cash buyers pay a little less than the consignment shops and the bids vary wildly depending on their own business models. I wouldn't expect a cash offer from a dealer to be that high. If you can stand to wait a bit, consigning to a dealer who does will with quality goods is a good strategy for this sort of thing. You didn't mention the date on the lab work but it's likely you'll need to update the report and this will cost a few hundred dollars and take upwards of 6 weeks. If it's older than a few years I would seriously consider this dispite the pain. New paper sells better. Talk to your selling partner about it. If you're going to sell outright, let them do it but if you're consigning you may need to be involved.

I was told the ring could probably fetch me around 8.5k net on consignment, maybe more.

It's a beautiful diamond, although not very big by some standards, the number of compliments we received from strangers were numerous. I am kind of surprised how much I am able to get for the diamond considering what I paid for it. Just goes to show you how well, a superior cut diamond holds value.
