Hi all-

I am going through divorce and just trying to get an idea of the resale value of my engagement and wedding rings.

The engagement ring is a 1.00 carat princess cut diamond (E, VSI) in a platinum setting with another .23 carats of channel set diamonds (average quality H, VSII. The original cost of the diamond was $5,300 and the setting was $1,200. The appraisal that came with the ring says $10,300, which seems a little crazy since we certainly didn''t pay that much for it!

The wedding ring is platinum setting with another .25 carats of channel set diamonds; not sure of the average quality but I would assume it''s the same as the setting of the engagement ring. There are no noticable differences between the diamonds. This cost about $1,200.

Right now the rings are being looked at by a jeweler and I should be getting their offer tomorrow. I just wanted to a little research so I would know if they are making a good offer. I played around with the tool at the top and for a similar diamond the price was around $3,500-4,500. I assume that price is what another consumer would pay for it, not what a jeweler would pay me for it.

Do you think it reasonable to expect $2-3k altogether for both rings? Thanks in advance!

Sorry to hear about your situation. Is the main stone GIA or AGS certified?

I think that's not unreasonable but might be optimistic. Times are tough for everyone and the market is saturated. And unfortunately diamonds and rings don't hold their value well. If it's GIA or AGS certified you'll fare a lot better than if it isn't.

In MHO, I think it''s reasonable to expect $2-3K.

If they told you $2-3K, expect the offer to be $2K.

Thanks - the main diamond is GIA certified.

I hope you get a decent offer. Would you be interested in keeping the diamond for a pendant?

It''s a tough market out there right now. With that in mind, I think your estimate is reasonable. Good luck.

Thanks - the main diamond is GIA certified.

That''s great news. It''ll be much more likely that you''ll get what you''re looking for then.
