Hi All,

I love this forum and wanted to thank all of you for the education I''ve received from all your posts..

I''m interested in a chopard pendant but don''t want to pay the inflated prices necessary for the name. What are the rules behind having a vendor custom make something similar to a pendant from a designer?

http://www.chopard.com/worldwide/us/2j_pendhdiamondsfl.htm

The pendant is the first one of the left but I would change it up a little bit (pave on the sides of the big circle and not having 3 flowers but one or two)... any suggestions are welcome!

However, I DO NOT want to step on any infringement laws or patent laws if this is not allowed. Please let me know, thanks!

oh!! i''d like to know the answer to this one, too!

Has to be at least 20% different from the designer piece

Princess V,

Thanks for the response.

How do you calculate what 20% is?

You really don''t. It''s rather subjective from what I''ve seen. Some jewelers are more strict with the 20% than others. It''s really hard to say because think about the original Tiffany 6 prong setting. There are so many variations out there, none of which I would say were 20% different since there isn''t that MUCH variation to do on a simple solitare setting.

My advice would be to find some jewelers you are willing to work with, shop around for some quotes and of course give them the picture along with your ideas. The worst that a jeweler could say is ''No, I won''t make that.''

I just had my e-ring setting remade into a custom setting and it was fun during the design process because the PSers here gave me advice as well as the jeweler. It ended up being a combination of like 3 rings?

Thanks for the great advice. I am going to ask for quotes from a few vendors--on the top of my head I can only think of WF.. are there any other vendors that would do this kind of work?

Thanks again!

Post a photo or image of the Chopard piece.

Describe what elements of it that you would change, and then maybe some of the experts in this can comment.

I don''t know where the 20% difference came up, but Chopard has some copyrighted designs, and even the slightest reproduction could represent infringement.

Hope this helps,

Is this it? I think it is cute, what and how would you changes things up?

Wow that pendant is really pretty...I couldn''t make out much from the website. Thanks for posting Matatora!

I used Quest Jewelers located in Dunn Loring, VA for my ring and many others have here as well. I was also interested in WF and Wink Jones.

I think you''d probably have to change the flowers a bit since that seems to be the main focus. But thats JMO.

I also used Quest to make my asscher ring. I agree the flowers could be changed a bit. You could even add a sapphire stone to the center of them. Or just change the shape of them, that would do it I think??

Yes! That''s it Mat! I tried doing that a few times but couldnt copy and paste it! How did you manage to do that?

I''m not sure about exactly how to change it yet but I was thinking about about adding a small ruby or sapphire to the middle of one or all three...

Are they snowflakes or flowers? I can''t really tell..

and if you have ideas of revising it, please let me know. Otherwise, I do LOVE the pendant.

Ideas:
1. Small ruby or sapphire to the middle of each snowflake/flower
2. Taking out two of the flowers and only having one
3. What do you think about the diamonds on the other circle? Would pave look better? And what type of diamonds are those? 1 pointers would be my guess...
Thanks!

freckles, your idea''s kind of remind me of this one

Belle told me how! She is brilliant and very helpful.

I clicked on the pictures to make it larger, then I clicked on the larger picture and holding down the button on my mouse I dragged the picture into the response box in my PS window. I think they could be either flowers or snowflakes. I think the idea of adding a pop of color is a great one, I love blue so I think that would be wonderful as a center. What about sapphires on loop which attaches the pendent to the necklace. Also what about three thin chains instead of two?

I just emailed a few places for a quote but am going to keep at it for unique ideas around this pendant.

Mssalvo, those are gorgeous! But after looking at the first pendant you posted, I think I like the asymmetrical character to the Chopard more. I''ll keep yall posted on the progress of this.

I don''t think you''re comparing two of the same items.

I believe the Chopard pendant that is pictured features what Chopard calls "Happy Diamonds". These diamonds are set behind a crystal and move around independently of each other.

In checking the Trademark and Patent site. Chopard has registered many of their designs and have numerous patents.

This concept of the "moving diamonds" is pretty much their intellectual property, and to copy it is probably a no no. Most reputable jewelers probably would make it, and even if they could do it probably wouldn''t.
