I have a 5 diamond gold ring that was my grandmother's. Jeweler had to cut it off her finger about 18 years ago. In the late 80s early 90s, one diamond was lost and replaced, grandparents paid $1000 to replace the lost one at that time. The gold is pretty heavy for a ring. Not sure about carate, was thinking 2.5 total, 1/2 carate x 5, but center one appears larger. I am clueless what to do. Do I have all removed and graded, would it be worth doing that or have band repaired and sell as a ring. I haven't done a cleaning in about 15 years, but been in box and not worn. Any advice is appreciated. I know it cost my grandpa $4000 40ish years ago. I know I can't get value accurate due to needs seen and graded, hard to get good photos using my phone, but here are a few.

Measure the stones in mm and use mm to carat chart to estimate tcw. Then. Clean it and try to loupe it for chips or major black carbon spots. Then post your info here. A modern 5 stone setting could cost you at least 500 for a basic one whereas as the repair send simple—so I would do that over a reset. I don’t know where you plan to sell it but you can compare selling prices for a 5 stone on eBay. You might decide to sell as is bc lots of eBay shoppers are looking for a deal and won’t mind repairing it or harvesting the stones.

Is it a special designer ring by any chance? Are there any markings inside?

To be honest, looking at the stones in the picture where the ring is on a finger, they do not look like 1/2 carat stones. Maybe the center one.

You do know even if it was fixed the value will not be anywhere near what your Grandpa paid (thats the nature of jewelry).

Its not something you might wear if you had it fixed?

Personally I’d ask my jeweler to solder it back together, clean it (free) and test if it’s 14k vs (more valuable) 18k gold.
Good luck.

Those stones aren’t half-caraters unless the ring is a size 15 or something.

Resolder, clean, and test just as @motownmama rec’d :))

I may end up having it fixed and giving it to wife. I tried looking at the diamonds and didn't see any black spots or cracks, but using a cheap jewelers magnifying glass.

I personally would want the diamonds checked out by a jeweler. The stones could make a lovely new ring if reset. I believe anyone buying it would be buying it for the diamonds and would scrap the setting. I think their jeweler really overcharged them if he charged $1000 to replace a stone.

I missed that - $1000 to replace a stone of that size is highway robbery.

I agree $1,000 sounds like robbery. There is a local small jeweler that I am going to take it to.

In my experience, secondhand jewelry doesn't tend to sell for much. So maybe the best course of action would be to ask your wife if she would like the ring if it was repaired, or if she'd like the diamonds to have re-set into something else. :)

Yes, my grandpa passed away in 1996 and my grandma in 2016. We(me and wife) cared for her in our home from 2000-2016, she had worst stage alzheimer's from 2003-2016, was given 3 months to live for 13 years, including hospice coming to home a few times a week.

Alzheimers is so unfair
Its commendable you were able to care for your grandma yourselves, i could not have done it for my FIL or my mum
I hope you wife was able to see enough of your grandma to know the person she was before the Alzheimers
And I hope your hospice helpers were as wonderful as they are here

I think this would now be an even more awsome ring for your wife because its speaks of your grandparent's personality before anyone got sick

Providing she likes it of course
