I wondered what happens if a diamond comes with a lesser quality lab''s certificate number inscribed on the girdle but a person wanted to send the stone to GIA for grading. They don''t want the lesser labs report associated with the stone because GIA''s would be the most accurate. What''s a person to do?

Is it possible to polish off a laser engraved certificate number? Do you think there would be much ct wt loss to do this?

And/Or would GIA be able to add thier cert number to a different area of the girdle?

Yes, it is possible to remove a laser inscription easily. But you need a diamond cutter to do it.

As far a accuracy in grading AGS would possibly in the future be preferred and more accurate.

See the 2006 thread about GIA new cut grading system.

Number could be added if you wish.

When diamonds have bruted girdles, ones without facets, we can remove most laser engraing ourselves using some tools of the trade and some expertise. On many diamonds, one must use a diamond cutter to keep the polished girdle shiny. Very little, if any, weight loss is caused.

What a great question, DiamLady!
