Recommendations for Harry Winston styled Classic Pear Ring?

Hi all,

I tried on the Classic Winston at Harry Winston a few months back in the pear shape and absolutely fell in love with the ring. I'm looking for a center stone (pear) in around a 2 carat, maybe slightly over a 2. HW isn't in our budget (unfortunately), but I'm looking to find a jeweler who can make a setting that is very close to the Classic Winston. It looks something like this:

Or on the HW site: http://www.harrywinston.com/store/engagement/diamond-rings-2/products/pear-shaped-diamond-ring

Does anyone have any specs for this particular ring? Sizing and etc.? The one I tried on in the NYC store was a two carat center, but I'm not sure what size the tapered baguettes were. I also don't know if I would need to tell a jeweler any other information regarding the setting. I'm trying to help my boyfriend as much as possible so that the ring search can be a bit easier for him. Please let me know if you have any specifics on this style.

Thank you so much! :)

Could you share your budget for a) the stone and b) the setting? The experts here will be better able to help you.

ERD (Engagement Rings Direct), Victor Canera, Steven Kirsch, David Klass and Leon Mege all have made similar rings, but it really depends on your budget and exact specifications.

I love your choice! Much like marquise cut stones, pears are having a nice resurgence. It's a classic choice and one which you should be able to find nice value as this cut can be on the lower end of the price per carat scale. Regardless of where you decide to buy, you (or your SO) will want to see the stone in person as its difficult to judge a pear cut without playing with it in different forms of light and at varying angles.

If you don't mind an estate piece, you may want to consider looking for a pre-loved ring. There are a fair number of these rings on the secondary market, and you might get lucky and find a Winston signed piece, for significantly less than you'd pay at retail. Here is one example of a somewhat comparable piece by a well known ebay seller, who is selling this Tiffany piece along with the papers, and I'm sure there is room to negotiate (its grossly overpriced and exhibits a bow tie) on the price:

To answer your question, I would guess each of the baguettes on your model ring are in the .15-.20 range. I can't imagine they would showcase anything under an F VVS stone in the store.

Best of luck to you in your search! Can't wait to see where you end up!

Thanks so much for your great replies. A vintage or estate piece would be fun! But I see what you mean about the bowtie.

Overall, we are looking to spend about $20k max. I'm sure we can go over a little if needed, but that would probably be the top. I would prefer a center stone of 2 carats in the pear. It need not be absolutely perfect, as long as eye clean.

I think the HW center was a G. I think is was VS2, but I am not positive. I have no idea what size the baguettes were, but I might call or go back and see if I can get some more information or take additional photos. I am also ok if the baguettes are a little smaller than the ones on the HW ring. I feel, with this style, it's more about the stone in the center.

Just curious, what was the retail on the Winston ring you tried on?

Re: Recommendations for Harry Winston styled Classic Pear Ri

I believe it was in the neighborhood of about $60,000.

Re: Recommendations for Harry Winston styled Classic Pear Ri

That's better than I thought but you can do just as well, if not better, in budget.

Re: Recommendations for Harry Winston styled Classic Pear Ri

That's really encouraging. My boyfriend will certainly be happy! :)

Re: Recommendations for Harry Winston styled Classic Pear Ri

Pre-loved is an excellent means of getting what you want, at below current retail trading prices. It's good to look at both paths and then decide. I try to avoid buying ""new" so I have a bit of a bias :)

If you can find a solid signed vintage piece, that's even better as secondary market signed pieces do a nice job of holding their value, assuming you buy well. Never hurts to look!

Be careful with color in a pear. I have a G pear and in some conditions, I see a little warmth at the tip. I'm color sensitive, so that's part of it, but I believe the pear will show color more easily than a RB.

I bought mine (in just the setting you like!) at a local estate dealer. Got a great deal.

Re: Recommendations for Harry Winston styled Classic Pear Ri

This is a really good point! Pears show their color. You may want to stay with stones with some blue fluorescence if traveling down the color chart. It can make a warmer stone appear more white, in some lighting conditions. It's also a great way to maximize budget and get more diamond for your money.

Re: Recommendations for Harry Winston styled Classic Pear Ri

A G VS2 pear at 2 cts is going to run around $20k without a setting. I am doubtful that you can find a branded piece over 2 cts at $20k. You can get a G SI1 around $16-18k, but that might be less likely to find in a branded piece. I have found that used Tiffany and other branded pieces generally tend to run a little higher than new generic brand retail. I hope you can get lucky and find a deal, but you might have to be patient and look awhile before finding it.

If you end up wanting to have it made, Victor Canera, Steven Kirsch, and Maytal Hannah would do a beautiful job of making this ring in platinum.

Re: Recommendations for Harry Winston styled Classic Pear Ri

Thanks all for your help. I'm not set on getting an estate piece or a branded piece. I definitely do not need a branded piece. I'm totally okay with having something designed, especially if I can do so within the budget. Do you think 20k is feasible for a 2 carat pear with the tapered baguette setting? I haven't seen too many pears in person because the jewelers I've visited tend not to have pears in stock. However, I would want to see the pear in person before making a decision. I personally though the G at HW was fine. I also tried on a similar ring at Cartier, which was also very beautiful. I tend not see the color differences that many people speak about, unless it is very, very obvious.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to look for in a pear stone? I know the bowtie can be a concern. I also know the cut is important.

Thank you so much again.

You may want to think about the Length to Width ratio you like.

Re: Recommendations for Harry Winston styled Classic Pear Ri

You can find a G VS ring in your budget.

A well cut G VS signed piece (Winston, Tiffany, Cartier, Heyman, VCA) may be a challenge. You would have a much better chance finding one in the H/I range.

For a Winston signed piece, it may prove more challenging because there are simply less of them out there in the marketplace. Here's another ring on ebay, priced very well (with a best offer option too) for under $8K.

New, pre-loved, whatever you decide, I'm sure you will find something perfect!

Re: Recommendations for Harry Winston styled Classic Pear Ri

Thanks so much. This is so helpful. I'm getting really excited. I LOVE the pear, especially in this setting. I feel it's super classic and elegant, yet not common today. It's really perfect.

I think I will end up getting a setting designed like the one above. How does that work? Can you buy the center stone separately and then have someone else design the setting? Wasn't certain what the common practice for that was. I asked one or two jewelers and they told me that they didn't do that, but I imagine that there has to be someone who would allow you to bring in an outside stone.

Victor Canera accepts stones that are bought elsewhere. I believe Maytal Hannah does as well and so do Steven Kirsch, ERD and Leon Mege. Mostly they will only accept the center stone but not side stones or melee. In some cases it can be good to source and have the setting made via one vendor as there could be some discount on the setting.
