I picked out 1 round and 2 princess cuts from JA. (we are looking at settings with both shapes in mind)

1) Princess .70ct $1450

2) Princess .72 $1245

3) Round .72 $1420
Carat weight:0.72 Certificate:GIA Color:K Shape: Round Clarity: SI2 Cut: Ideal

The 0.72 carat-K-SI2 round brilliant has an excellent amount of brilliance (white light return), with a great amount of fire (dispersion of color) and sparkle that is well balanced and symmetrical. It is a true "K" in color and faces up with a slight warmth and is also "eye clean".

Between the two princess cut diamonds, the 0.70 carat-J-VVS2 is the better option of the two. It has a very good amount of brilliance, fire and sparkle that is all well balanced and symmetrical. It is a true "J" in color, which means that it will face up with some warmth. The 0.72 carat-K-VS1 is a beautiful option, but there is a fair amount of black under the table, causing it to have the weakest performance. It is a true "K" in color, which means that is a yellow tint face up. Both diamonds face completely "eye clean" also.

I really like the looks of the round! It will look larger on the finger as well. I'm not impressed with either of the princess cuts, if that is the direction that you 'd like to go then I think that there are better options out there.

I like the round best too.

The bottom princess aset should be brighter than the other princess but it would also be nice to see the real images
of the princess cuts to see the faceting pattern a little better. I've definitly seen asets that look better than these 2.

edit - I just looked at the specs and you are pretty high in the clarity area on the princess cuts. I would come down
to VS2 or eye-clean SI1. That way you could go up in the color.

Edit 2 - I was just reading the gemologist write up on the princess stones and to me it looks like there is more black
under the table of the top aset...which is not what the gemologist is saying. So...dont know what to say about that.
I would definitly take the opinion of an expert that has the stones in hand over me :cheeky: .

Do you have the links to the diamonds on JamesAllen.com? Can you post them here?

The round hands down.

I think I am going with the round

I don't have links to the stones at the moment. And they wont show up in a search because I have them on hold. I will ask them later.

I initially planned on going with SI1-2 stones to save on money but these vs1 and vvs2 were the only ones available at the time. either way I am pretty sure I will be going with the round since it will face up bigger and it is an si2 so my money isnt being tied up in clarity.

And I had the concern about the gemologists opinion contradicting with the black in the aset as well so I asked JA to confirm if the numbers were switched by accident on the images and this was their answer.

Thank you for your quick reply! I understand your concern with the ASET images, but I did just recheck them and they are correct. While ASET images are a great tool used to "predict" the light performance of a diamond, nothing beats the trained eye of the gemologist looking at the diamond giving us feedback on its performance.

I heard a saying once that is perfect for this type of situation. "You can ask a fish and bird to describe what a boat looks like and both will give you a different explanation; neither one is wrong." An ASET image is a picture of the diamond at one angle, showing the brilliance in the diamond, but it is not showing us the diamond in any other position than top down. The gemologist is able to see the diamond at every angle and see the fire and sparkle in the diamond.

If I placed these two diamonds in front of you and you saw them side by side, you most likely would be able to notice that the 0.72 carat has more dark reflections under the table than the 0.70 carat. The gemologist did say that it is noticeable and that even the average, untrained eye would notice it.

In the 360, it did look like the .72 was a bit more greyish and the more expensive .70 had a some more blue reflections.

I asked if the round K color would be too noticeable considering it is an excellent cut and this was the reply
In regards to the color of the round brilliant, it is true that an excellent cut, round brilliant diamond does hide the color and inclusions better than other diamonds. The average eye can't see warmth in a diamond until we get down to an "M" in color (which we do not offer), however, a color sensitive or trained eye can see it. I am sure that you would find this diamond to be a nice white color, but in the case that you are color sensitive, we have to consider a "K" round brilliant to have some warmth in it.

I believe that you will likely notice less body color in the K round brilliant than you would in a K princess cut, however I don't really agree with the statement that the average eye can't detect warmth until around color grade M. I believe that most average consumers begin to see body tint around I and lower. That isn't to say that they would consider them to be 'yellow' or that they don't face up quite white, but I think it's misleading to state that only a trained eye or colored sensitive person would be capable of detecting the color in a GIA K stone. That said, it's likely that in the face up position it will appear quite 'white' to you, viewed through the pavilion though, color will be much easier to detect. Given the choice of a .7 K MRB and a .5 G/H, I would probably choose the larger .7 K, but that is a personal decision and one that you can only decide after having some time to spend with the stones to determine your particular color sensitivity.

Congratulations! I'll be looking forward to your SMTB thread! =)
