Rec for antique jewelry appraiser in NYC? To vet pawn piece

Hi All,

Can anyone recommend an appraiser in NYC who has experience appraising antique/estate jewelry? Can I assume that all the appraisers in the Resources tab are trustworthy and will have sufficient experience? Of the four listed in NYC, one person - Justin Krall - actually identifies himself as experienced in estate jewelry so he seems like the obvious answer. I've never had anything independently appraised so, if there are other things I should consider please let me know.

I'm considering buying an estate ring from a pawn shop who has a challenging return policy and, while I'd happily use one of the appraisers favored on this forum (David Atlas, Neil Beatty, etc.), they are out of state for me. If I choose to return the ring, I'm out shipping expenses in all directions and the cost of the appraisal, and I only have a 10 day window. So, if it's possible to get an accurate appraisal in my area, that would be ideal.

Also, if anyone has experience with pawn shopping I'm all ears. This ring is listed at a too-good-to-be-true price so I fully expect it to be a far lower color and clarity than described but I've factored that in and it still seems well priced so I'm inclined to check it out. I've negotiated their return policy down from: a 20% restocking fee and no returns unless your piece appraises at a value less than you paid to: restocking fee waived and returns granted for any reason within 10 days. I plan to pay with a credit card though paypal so I'll have two levels of fraud protection but, still. What am I missing...?

Thank you!

David Wolf has been used by many PSers. I am sure any independent appraisers of jewelry are familiar with vintage jewelry. That's probably what they do much of the time.

David Wolf would be a fine choice. Before establishing Just Appraisers in 2000, he developed the estate jewelry department at Macy's flagship store in Herald Square and held several positions, including merchandise manager and head of antique jewelry acquisitions, with Windsor Jewelers (buys and sells estate jewelry). My father's Midwestern law firm retained him 10-12 years ago on behalf of an estate that was doing battle with the IRS; I myself have used him & can say that I think you will like sitting in with him -- he's very nice and informative. :))

Just Appraisers is at 5th & 49th, alongside Rockefeller Plaza.

Awesome, thanks Pinto! I have an inquiry in with David for pricing and availability and am hoping to hear back shortly.

I'm hemming and hawing about making the purchase though. It seems low-risk but I can't shake the feeling that I've overlooked something important and it's a lot of money to bet with. Hm...

I'm going to make a decision this weekend so, thank you for sending the luck! If I pull the trigger and something interesting happens (for better or worse) I'll let you guys know.

Ok, I had the chance to visit the ring in person and it shed very little light unfortunately. The question has become: what color is this pawn shop "I" color stone in relation to my GIA J? Mine is on the left, pawn ring is on the right, under bright shop lighting against a business card.
