I''m ready to sell my diamond engagement ring. The specs are below. I don''t know anything about diamonds, so this is a learning experience for me. I talked to a jeweler yesterday who said he would give me 3k but that I should be able to get $5500 if I sold it independently. So I''ve listed it in the paper.

I''m guessing ebay isn''t a good route. I checked a little and the prices don''t seem to be going that high.

Any insight from you pros?

There is a LOT about this stone that you have not told us. Table Depth, who told you it was an F-VVS1. If local jeweler did then the evaluation is not worth much to any one who does not know your local jeweler and whether or not he knows what he is doing.

If one of the minor labs, then ditto above, some like IGI or EGL Israel we will assume to be in error. If GIA or AGS then we will give more credence to the cert, but will need to see the stone since it has been set and a VVS1 is easy to knock down to VVS2 or VS1 with a little rough wear.

If the stone is well cut or better yet ideal cut, then the $5500 is very low more than 40 back of Rap, possibly well below wholesale or it could be well above wholesale if the stone is poorly cut.

You came looking for a simple answer, and we can only ask you many questions. Even when we have the answers to our questions there will be options for you that will minimize or maximize your sales price. There is a discussion of this very issue in another thread that is I believe entitled GIA Reports, so your timing is propitious.

That stone is probably worth more than the $5500 you are being told you can get if you sell it yourself. Go read the thread I mentioned above so I don't have to spend ten minutes retyping what I said there, take two patience pills and call me in the morning. Better yet, go see your local jewelers and see if one of them will not do a consignment deal with you similar to what I proposed in the other thread.

Wink's idea is a good one--a friend of mine sold her ring on consignment at a local jeweler and did much better going that route vs. eBay or the want ads. You're more likely to get close to what it's worth and it sounds like a nice stone.

Before you do the consignement just make sure you are dealing with a jeweler you really trust. Make sure you ID everything on your diamond (even better do a gem print). The reason is that one of our friends had their diamond switched by the jeweler. The jeweler then said this is not moving and returned the stone to her after a few months. A much lower grade diamond was put in the setting.

Yikes! That's horrible!

I've called all the jewelers in the area and none of them sell on consignment. That was my first plan of action, but it didn't work out. I called nearly every jeweler in the immediate area.

Wink, I did read the other thread, right after you suggested it in your first post.

What would you suggest I ask for this stone?

The ad will run ten days in 5 area papers and starts on Friday. Any advice for when the calls start rolling in? With my luck, there won't be any, but in case there are, I want to be prepared for how to handle this.

Should I take offers and tell people I'll call back after a period of time so I don't miss a better offer?

One more thing. It's in an 18k gold (sz 10) setting. If someone calls and actually wants that part, what is it worth?

Try to line up a secure location, not at your house. Some people have recommended a bank (pulling the stone from the safety deposit box.

Also, you may want to find an independent appraiser in your area in case if someone wants to verify the stone.
