it's an interesting hypothetical tho...the cullinan diamond was cut into a bunch of smaller pueces, maybe an expert can weigh in on why thay decision was made...
For decades De Beers did not have scanners in front of the crushers so who knows how many huge diamonds were crushed.In the ‘90’s I worked for a South African site holder. They told me that in the ‘70’s they did saw larger pieces of rough into smaller sizes because they were easier to sell. It was a different business and different world back then.
There are plenty of cases where planning discussions for important diamonds went on for months (even years) before the diamond was put on the wheel. I am also sure that in some of those cases there were very heated arguments over the direction.
