Hey y''all, thanks to all your helpful insights I''ve narrowed my search down to this one diamond for my engagement ring. It''s passed my smell test and I wanted to know if it does for you guys:

Shape: Round
Carat weight: 1.49
Cut: Ideal
Color: G
Clarity: VS2
Certificate: GIA

Depth: 60.1%
Table: 58.0%
Pav Angle: 40.8
Crown Angle: 33

Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Excellent
Girdle: Medium to slightly thick
Culet: Very Small
Fluorescence: None
Measurements: 7.38*7.42*4.45

I really like this diamond for the following reasons:

HCA rating = 0.8 (excellent on all counts)
1.49 carat count = saddling the "magic" weights for a great value
Idealscope looks great (i''ll upload it soon, I couldnt upload in the first post for some reason)
$/ct is less than $8,000 (is this a good price?)

I had some questions:

a) What is the average turnover for diamonds at an e-tailer? Wiring this money right now would put me in a tight budget, I had hoped to wait another few months to increase my buffer.

b) For HCA ratings, is 0-2 in general a uniform range? (i.e., a 0.5 is not that much better than a 1.5) I know the HCA rating isnt supposed to be a deciding factor, but I was glad to see it got a 0.8 HCA rating

c) A G/VS2 is fine for an engagement ring of this size right? I went to a B&M jeweler and we were only shown E-F, VS1s, and she was smitten. From all my research this G/VS2 shouldn''t be noticeably different (although it turns out she has quite the eye for distinguishing the color on stones...)

Thank you guys so much for your help!

Thanks!

The image looks really good, its possible this stone could favour brilliance over fire due to the slightly shallow crown angle, ask one of the gemologists concerning the performance nuances of this diamond.

As for prices they are on the increase, this thread might be of interest to you,

HCA is used for rejection, not selection, especially once you have images these always trump the HCA score. The aim is to score below 2 then evaluate with images, a lower score isn't better than a higher one.

G VS is very nice quality for an engagement ring, unless your GF is particularly colour sensitive then she should be very pleased with a G colour I would think.

Thank you so much Lorelei for always providing quick and insightful feedback. I was quite happy with the pictures on this stone. Do you think < $8k/carat is a good deal for this size (1.49 ct)? I''m just a bit jittery at having to drop the hammer soon since the sales person told me they could put it on hold for an additional 24 hours.

Hi Lorelei,

I was looking at other idealscope images and you noted some have intentional leakages for contrast and scintallation. My idealscope is fairly consistent in red and the reflection of light; can this be not as ideal? I know this is ironic since the other poster was worried about having white spots while I''m worried about NOT having them. Haha, is there a balance between brilliance and fire that the presence/lack of white spots contributes to?

Thanks

Hi Melz

Here is a brief explanation. Both your diamond and the other diamond in question appear to be of very high levels of craftmanship and beauty, however both diamonds might have a slightly different '' flavour'' if you will. The other stone with the distinctive white leakage points might show slightly different optics, this would be subtle and not something that would jump out to the casual, untrained observer. The leakage points can enable a sharp on/off performance of the facets, greater contrast and dispersion.

The leakage points are there in your image but its hard to judge properly as it looks as if there is a lot of backlighting in the IS image which is hiding them somewhat, your image looks very good indeed.

Thank you so much Lorelei. I really appreciate you taking your time to explain and help with all our nitpicking!

wow.. <$8000 for 1.5 G VS2. That''s nice. Is this H&A?

She said less than $8k per carat... meaning it''s more like $12,000.
