I have a 7.65mm round stone. I''m looking at a 7.5mm round setting. do ya think the stone will fit or should I go to an 8mm round setting?

You should be ok BUT it really depends on the setting. For example, if it''s a bezel setting then there''s hardly any tolerance.

If you go to the 8mm setting you may find you have a small air line. The 7.5mm setting is probably safer.

Ditto, LD. If it''s got prongs, you should be fine +/- ~5mm.

If it''s bezel setting, I believe the tolerance is usually about .1 mm, so much tighter.

Ok thats great! I got the stone already but the setting is another question (though I have one in mind) BTW its a prong setting.

Thanks!

Helpful thread, let''s see if I''ve understood it...

So the prong settings can go about .5mm either way?

So a 6.5 mm stone would fit in a 7 mm setting ?

yep.

I was able to put my 6.6mm stone in a 7.5mm prong setting, and works great!

There is more leeway with prong settings. In this case, since you can get a 7.5 mm setting, I’d pick that instead of the 8 mm setting.

OK THANKS all of that is very helpful.

I''d like to avoid custom work if I can.

Can I just add a caveat? The answer is not always. It depends on the setting and also the gemstone. The .5mm/.1mm is a very good starting point but if the stone isn''t a precision cut it can cause difficulties.

OK Thanks LD!
