Hi everyone,

Ok, i've been lurking for a while and reading every post ever created about Radiant cut diamonds on this forum...and I pretty much know how most of you would answer but I have to ask because I am having a panic attack about all the dimensions, etc of radiant cut diamonds.

So here's the situation. I am working with a private jeweler/diamond dealer that comes highly recommended from many people. I am looking at Radiant diamonds. He brought in 6 radiant diamonds around 2 carats for me to look at and compare, etc. We finally narrowed it down to one but it freaks me out because according to internet sites that I have searched and searched, it doesn't meet the "excellent" cut standards. I have read that Depth and Table should not exceed 69% for excellent cut.

Well, on this diamond the Depth is 73.9% and the table is 71%. So is this a horrible purchase? I feel like if it is the one we picked out of 6 diamonds, then it should be the one?? But I guess I'm a numbers guy and the fact that everyone says "nothing more than 69% depth and table...blah blah blah..." it totally makes me nervous that I am making a bad decision...even though it was my favorite diamond...isn't that crazy??? I felt like i could "see through it" in a couple places and that also made me nervous, but it still seemed to be the best. Here are the full dimensions. Would love to hear your thoughts.

Depth % 73.9
Table% 71.00
Polish Excellent
Symmetry Very Good
Girdle Slightly Thick
Thick
Culet None
Fluorescence None
Dimensions 8.11*6.43*4.75

My thought about stones that are too deep is that they usually have diameters that are too small for their weight. You don't want to pay for a 2 ct. Stone that faces up like a 1.7 ct., or thereabouts. So do not buy in haste! There are other diamonds and diamond dealers. I would not buy a stone that is too deep!

I did a little checking and am seeing some well cut radiants that are deep as well. But I would absolutely do some comparison shopping.

Thank you for your response. The diamond looks great...I think. My diamond guy brought in 6 other 2+ carat radiant diamonds and 3 cushion diamonds. So we had plenty to look at. it actually faces up nicely as compared to some other radiants in the bunch (in terms of size). I am certainly not feeling like I am buying in haste as you said, but I am just concerned that I am buying something that shouldn't be so deep. mainly because of what the internet says. haha.

Thank you also for providing the JamesAllen diamond, but I am actually wanting the more rectangular shaped radiant. And I think I am more comfortable buying from my diamond guy than the internet.

Anyone else have any opinions? I feel like I should be looking for something less dee

Don't worry about it, if you got to choose from 9 2ct stones!

Hi Radiantbuyer,
A common quandary.
Information about Radiant Cut diamonds is hard to come by- and a lot of what I've read n the web does not hold true.

It's really not possible to use measurements to declare a stone "well cut" without looking at it in person.
it is easier to eliminate stones based on measurements- but even that's not really reliable.
To complicate matters further, there are many facet designs being sold as "radiant cut".

Are you looking for a stone with patterns like a round brilliant- or one that's got a cacophony of sparkles and no patterns ( sometimes called "crushed ice")?

In either case, throw out ANY chart on the internet that purports to grade the cut of fancy shaped diamonds based on measurements.

ETA- 73.9% is on the deep side, I agree- but it's not a number I'd dismiss offhand without visual inspection.

Thanks RockDiamond. Well, the facet design appears to be the most common one (according to the GIA report). It looks like the Orig Radiant Cut facet design. It's corners are actually cut a little bit more than all of the other radiants that we looked at but I actually liked that for some reason. Is that bad? Why does this have to be so difficult? Hmmm....

anymore radiant advice here? I'm having a panic attack. Well...thinking about having one. haha.

Can you post a picture of the stone you want?

i didn't take a picture of it actually.
