Hello all you diamond experts,

Before coming to this site I barely even understood the 4Cs. Thanks to this site I''ve been reading a lot of good information, and after days of analyzing some of this stuff, I''m getting much closer to picking out the perfect engagement ring for my future fiance! I''ll get to my questions soon, but just so you know what my tastes/biases are, here is how I personally weigh the 4C''s:

Cut = .45 (seems like many others on here think cut is most important, too)
Color = .20 (I don''t like yellowish tint at all, but then again I''m not sure how important it is on a < 1 ct diamond)
Carat = .20 (Quality over quantity, baby!)
Clarity = .15 (as long as I can''t see any inclusions with 20/20 vision, I don''t really care if they can be seen under a loupe or microscope. However, I''m not a gambler, so VS2 seems to be a good fit for me since I''m buying online.)

I know she''ll love this 18K white gold setting from James Allen ($775), so I guess I should *probably* get the diamond from there just to keep things simple. I''m looking at an IGI .73ct H&A Ideal cut, E, VS2 for $3,380. HCA score is 2.3.

Setting:

Diamond:

Question 1: Based on the specs, the Idealscope image, and the HCA Score I think the price is pretty decent. Would you agree? Any other factors I should consider?

Question 2: How do you think the .73ct center diamond would look in that setting? Would it look too small? Or would it make the 6 diamonds in the band (G-H, VS2-SI1 avg) look too dull? Does anyone have pics and specs of a similar setup?

BTW, I''m not trying to rush this for V-DAY :)

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Hi Mcchi! Welcome to PS!

I agree with your priority order and think that that's a great way to approach a diamond purchase - Cut, Color, Carat, Clarity.

I love that setting as well! It's gorgeous and a .70 diamond should look great as a center stone. Someone else on PS just got a similar setting from The Facets Collection. I think it is Impatientone ... If I can find the thread, I will post it for you so you can see what it looks like in real life. *edited to add* Here is the thread to which I was referring. Click here

With regards to the diamond you have selected ... It is a great color/clarity combo - love the E/VS2, however, if you are concerned about cut and are placing priority on this "c", I venture to suggest that you should be able to find a more well cut diamond out there.

I have found a few for you to compare if you are interested ...
0.744 E/SI1 A Cut Above, $3,396 (PS discount/bankwire price) -- You would want to confirm with WF that this diamond is eyeclean ... if so, it would be a lovely choice!

0.733 E/SI1, $3,466 (PS disc/bw price) - -- same for this one, you'd want to make sure it is eyeclean.

Good luck on your search

Thanks for the post, spark.. I do like your suggestions and agree that the two diamonds you linked to have better cuts. I just worry about buying the setting at one place and the diamond at another. Who should set the diamond into the ring? The diamond vendor or the setting vendor? What about the extra fees? What if something goes wrong?

diamondseeker, thanks for the post - I have checked out their settings and some of them were pretty nice, just not quite what I want.

EDIT - the Legato is pretty dang close to what I'm looking for... HMMM...

You''re welcome... Glad to help!

As far as what seems to be consensus around here... the diamond vendor would be the choice to set the diamond in the setting and not the other way around.

I know that it can be a little more inconvenient dealing with 2 vendors instead of just one, however, if you cannot obtain the same quality diamond from the setting vendor, it may be worth your while. Dealing with 2 vendors seems to be quite commonplace around here though with limited challenges or hassles. The vendors seem to have the process down pat and make it pretty seamless for the consumer.

Not sure about the fees, however, I believe that WF, for example, might *not positive* charge you $100 to have the diamond set? I can, however, tell you from experience, that if something goes wrong with the diamond that you purchase from them, they will replace it with a like diamond no problem and with no cost to you. I recommended WF b/c their ACA diamonds are very popular and guaranted well cut ... additionally, their customer service is top notch!

Why don''t you give them a call and share your concerns and see what they are able to come up with for you ... They are quite accommodating.

Spark,

The more I look at that legato ring from WF the more I like it. That would definitely simplify things if I decide to get that one. Perhaps a call to them is in order. Only thing I worry about it is trusting someone to truthfully tell me if its eyeclean or not.

The Legato really is gorgeous and is quite popular ... a lot of PS''ers love it. I was just eyeing it up actually, given Diamondseeker''s post and thinking that it might work well for you.

A call to them is certainly in order as it would certainly streamline the process for you .... Just a note: If you do like that diamond, make sure to place it on hold before someone else scoops it up from under you.

With regards to the eyeclean issue -- I would have absolutely no hesitation in trusting your WF rep to confirm whether or not is is. I would, however, "define" your expectations as to eyecleanliness so that you are certain that you are both on the same page. I''m super picky so I let them know that ... I don''t want to see any inclusions, at a social distance or close up in the table or in the pavillion ... nothing/nowhere with my unaided eye. Given that they know your expectations, they will aim to please. If it''s just not to your standard, they will let you know and do their best to find you something that is. I understand your hesitation as I felt it myself when I made my first purchase with them this past year, however, they came through for me and my purchase was exactly what they touted it to be.
