Before anyone suggests it without reading the rest of my post, yes, I did a search on ring sizes and ring sizing. They didn''t answer all of my questions.

I''ve had my ring finger (left) sized at 3 different jewelry stores, and (according to them) am 3 different sizes: 8.5, 8.75 & 9. I have a ring from ice.com that my boyfriend got me for Christmas which spins around fairly often because it''s a little loose, so I''m thinking the 8.75 is *probably* closest to my actual ring size.

However, as a fairly rude salesperson once pointed out to me, my fingers are weird because they aren''t that size because of my knuckles; they''re that size because my fingers (like the rest of me) are rather pudgy. So they poof out a little, instead of being a straight line from my knuckle to where my finger meets my hand. (Does that make sense?)

So, here''s my question. Er, questions. I know it makes the most sense to just go to the store where you want to buy your setting and have them measure your finger. But, I will be in the UK, and (hopefully) won''t be buying from a store; I am hoping to have either the Flame or Torchiere made for me by Mark Morrell. So, my questions are:

1) Does Mark Morrell have sizing rings he sends out to make sure the size I think I am is the same as his size of the same description?
2) How do I go about giving him an accurate ring size if he doesn''t have them? String around the finger? I do NOT want to have to take his ring to another jeweler to have it resized, mostly because I don''t want anyone else to touch it if possible but also because jewelers here in the UK are really expensive and I haven''t found one I trust yet.
3) Doesn''t the width of the band make a difference on the size? The ring I have now had a very thin band (2mm), but will a wider band (estimated in threads here to be about 2.6mm) mean that I should go for a slightly larger size, or does the width of the band not make a difference?

Thanks, I think that''s all of them.

The width of the band definitely makes a difference, but going from 2.0 to 2.6 is a small enough difference that it won''t matter. My e-ring is 2.4 mm in width, wedding band is 2 mm, and both are size 5 and fit great separately. When I stack both together for a total of 4.4 mm, they''re tight, but still comfortable. I don''t know the answers to the rest of your questions, sorry!

Hi Gwendolyn,

Band width definitely makes a difference! Try on a sizer that is about the same width as the ring you plan to have MWM create for you. I don't know what his practices are, but I had the same experience regarding sizing. I went to every store I could and flat out asked if I could try on their sizing rings. I plan on having a 2mm band width (or slightly less) so I went for the thinner sizing sets and was able to come to a consensus. BTW that salesperson is a weenie. You (and I'm sure your fingers) are beautiful! From what I've been told, the ring shouldn't be too easy to get on and off, but it shouldn't feel like you're going to need to butter up your hands every time you take your ring off. HTH!

Gwendolyn, how about ordering some of those cheapy plastic sizers that some of the ladies have recommended in other threads (was it Gr8tfulDave''s thread?) in your desired width and then you could send MWM the one that fits you best and he can copy that size?

Hi,

Besides the width of the ring also if it has a comfort fit or flat inside makes a difference in finger size as well as having two rings next to each other.

I have seen people with larger knuckles having sizing bead inside the shank but I am not sure how comfortable that will be also the hinged shanks are quite popular for a true fit.

When we got my ring from Verragio, the jeweler used a special sizer from Verragio because inside the ring has these scrolls which makes the ring actually more comfortable and doesn''t spin on my finger. It''s hard to describe but very unique.

Oooh, I like this idea! I hadn''t heard of these--thank you, Delster! I will have to see if I can dig up a link for them.

I saw it recently, people were talking about getting plastic sizing sets from somewhere dead cheap, and now I can't find the thread! I even remember that they were saying the sizers were blue... this is so frustrating!

ETA: Eureka!!!

Oh, BTW, I don't have 'normal' fingers either - my knuckles are the exact same size as the rest of my fingers

Aha! While you were finding that, I found this set of plastic ring sizers for $2: http://in-gifts.net/jewacplasrin.html

Hmmm...the plastic rings on there look a bit on the thin side but they might do the trick...*strokes chin*

PS: Awesome, we should totally form an abnormal finger club!

Hi Gwendolyn,

Hiya, pixley! I LOVE that you called that one salesperson a weenie! Hahah, yeah, it kinda ticked me off at the time--while she was saying it, she touched me (I don''t like it when strangers touch me without permission, kinda weirds me out), smooshing the bit of my finger where the ring sits. She wasn''t getting a penny of my money after that. Was NOT a fan.

You, on the other hand, I am a fan of! Thank you so much for your sweet words, and your useful suggestions about ring sizing. The one I have now, the 9, slides off pretty easily, but wouldn''t fall off. The center stone is always moving around, but I think I''d prefer that to having it be too tight and making my fingers squish out unattractively. The salesperson who said I was an 8.5 was convinced I was, but it felt a smidge too tight for me. So, I am hoping the 8.75 is the happy medium, but I don''t think these plastic ring sizers do quarter-sizes, do they? Hrm....

Oh yeah, can''t forget about the matching wedding band....hmmm, maybe the larger size is the way to go then...

Thanks for your input, urseberry! That was a good point I''d forgotten about!

Hi there, DiamondGirlHH! My problem (alas) isn''t big knuckles, it''s chubby fingers. I''m intrigued by these scrolls you describe in your Verragio ring. I had a crazy idea of possibly asking Mark Morrell to do a European shank on the Flame or Torchiere in hopes that that would help keep it from spinning, but I''m not sure I should mess with perfection.

Hi Gwendolyn,

I think European shank is a great idea to keep the ring from spinning. I am sure he can some up with some design ideas.

Make sure to post the pictures one you get it. Good luck!

Heather.

gwen, so is this happening soon???!?

DiamondGirlHH, I surely will no matter what I get, don''t you worry!!

strmdr, that is interesting. I will have to check and see if my dad has one of those caliper things in the garage when I''m back home in April. Otherwise I might get one off eBay--there was a set of ring sizers that came with a caliper for $20 on there, I think.

surfgirl, that depends. Define "soon."

No, definitely not soon as in 2 months....probably more like 6 or 8, methinks...

Ebay do ring sizers.

What I did for mine was to go to Tiffany and get them to size me (they do US sizes not UK) in a band the right kind of width for my e-ring. It came out spot-on.

My brother and his FI screwed it up - he had her measured in a UK size in a thick wedding band. I told him to go to Tiffs, but he didn't want to give her any hints - um like trying on w-bands isn't a hint
20.gif
...

Anyway, she has a thin band on her e-ring and so it was too big. I thought she was a bit mad sizing down a whole UK size in the middle of winter, but then this is the girl that NEVER takes her ring off and NEVER cleans it (because she'd have to take it off)!

I do have a jeweller here who I trust 150%, and is reasonably priced. They did the emergency surgery on my prongs and were super-careful with my ring. The GG there is lovely and has some gorgeous pieces of her own that she let me see (rubies to die for).

I had no idea that the width of the band would make such a difference... and my jeweller didn''t mention it either. So now I have a 4.5 size ering and wb... when in actuality I prolly need something just under 4! Not being in the same country is making re-sizing pretty hard...

Also don''t forget that your plastic sizer might feel perfect... but add the top heavy weight of your diamond and it could swing around too much.
