As some of you who may have read my earlier post know, I have been having some doubts about the correct ring size for the pave solitaire that Leon is currently making for me. I have read in some very helpful threads here that wearing a wedding band with the ring (as I intend to do) can make both fit smaller, and there seems to be a consensus to err on the side of a little big rather than a little too small for comfort sake.

Anyways, I called Leon to get his feedback on this issue today. He said that he strongly favors erring on the side of too small. He said that if a ring is too small then any trusted jeweler should be able to scale and repolish the inside of the band, however if a ring is too big there are fewer options as the ring has to be cut, etc., etc., for which he would recommend shipping it back to him for as it is easy to damage a ring in the process of downsizing. He also said that if a ring fits larger than it should then this can lead to the ring bending which can lead to lost stones, etc. etc. He also said that by and large the sizing tools used by different jewelers are quite subjective, and so one jewelers 5.5 could be a bit larger or smaller than another jewelers 5.5.

When I asked him about additional bands affecting the fit, he said that it''s his job to take into account the width of the ring and bands and how they will be worn and to size them true to the finger measurement.

I found this information and perspective useful and just thought that I''d pass it along in case it was of use or interest to anyone else facing a similar dilemma!

best thing to do is take a ring that fits and have someone with a dial caliper measure the inside of it and the width.
That is far more accurate than sizing bands.
know anyone that works in a machine shop or with machine tools or someone that reloads their own ammo?

That''s a great idea - especially given that I''ve scoured the city that I live in (of over a million people) and I *cannot* find a jeweler with sizing rings between 5.5 - 6. A dial caliper? I''m not sure that I am acquainted with any of the aforementioned. I knew I should have joined the gun club...

ask around they are pretty common I bet in your circle of friends a hubby or boyfriend has one or can get one.
car mechanics may also have one but usualy they use other kinds.

they come in handy for a lot of things...
need to know what size bolt or screw to get? measure the old one...
I use mine once a month for something or another.

Low end ones that will work for this are only $20 so you could get your SO one hehehehehehe

OK - thanks! I have a new project for tomorrow - quit calling all of the jewelry stores and goldsmiths and begin calling acquaintances with mechanical / ammo loading interests...

Putting an end to my obsessing over this issue would be well worth the $20 investment!
