Hi I’m new to diamond buying. I’m currently looking to buy a diamond for my gf who I’m planning to propose to soon. I found this diamond that listed as D color and IF clarity. About 1.2 carats and $10k. I ll attach the video of it below. I wanted to see if this is a good diamond. How does it look? Should I go for it? 6E5CA769-9420-4986-A060-93923BCA7A09.jpeg042AD6C4-0C97-46E9-B7EA-E4B6D6043C6F.jpeg32E494C5-C906-40C0-B938-442553433E3A.jpeg

Well, in the pictures you posted, it definitely looks more colorful than a D. Does it have a lab report? If so, can you post it? Does the recipient “must have” a D color and IF clarity? Cuz 10K is a super lot for a 1.2 carat pear.

Thank you for your response. Yes I agree. This D doesn’t look colorless. I will attach the GIA report below. No she doesn’t have to have a D color or IF clarity but something close to those letters is preferred. What is a good price for a 1.2 carat pear?

Honestly the color of that diamond looks nowhere near a D…I don’t quite understand the report. I’d double check that number inscribed on the diamond match the report

$10k looks like the going rate for a D/IF

I wonder if they are using a camera with a colored case on it. Talk to the vendor and ask for new pictures that show the actual
color (and not the yellow/brown).

Personally, with pears, you need to find one that has good light return and nice faceting and take whatever the specs are that
it comes in (within tolerance). They are not like round brilliant where you can just order up certain specs that you like.

So, my advice would be to look in the DEF (and G range if you can tolerate it) and the VS2 to IF range.

Thank you. I just contacted the vender and asked for more picture. Meanwhile, I will take all your advices and look for other options in case the new picture are still bad.

Nicely cut pear shapes are hard to find. I found this one which looks pretty good to me (but I'm not an expert). It seems to have fewer "mushy" facets down at the tip than many others I'm seeing. It doesn't seem to have much of a bow tie either.

Wow you can see clear through that flawless stone I'm sure if you held it up to a white piece of paper you would see the colorlessness It is a beautiful stone she would be lucky to have it

Thanks for suggesting that stone @Lookinagain. It looks good but do I need to worry about the fluorescence being medium on it?
Thanks for the compliment @heididdl. I’m taking everyone advise and asking for more pics or video. I ll update you guys on the pics and/or my decision.

Not in a flawless stone. Fluorescence doesnt inherently cause cloudiness

Maybe I'm just seeing things or it is the angle but the pear in the first photo doesn't look like the same pear as the second and third picture to me. Photo 1 pear looks like it is shorter with a flatter bottom. In photo 2 and 3 the pear looks more elongated and has a rounder bottom.

I also agree with @Cerulean that this doesn't look like a D.

You have a point @Diamond_Enthusiast ...it doesn't look like the same height. I wonder if the stone is not straight up and down
in the first photo (point tilted backward)? If its not that then could it be a different stone?

I like the 1.49 @Lookinagain posted better.

Appears to have a shallow stone bow tie - I would not consider without an ASET or Ideal-scope which would prove the point.

Thank you everyone. I did get more photos and video from the vender. I wasn’t please with the diamond. It wasn’t as bright and clean looking as I wanted. I also learned about shallow pears and how they lack brilliance so I have decided against that purchase. I am still learning about ASET and will ask for that on the next diamond I inquire. I will continue to do more research to see what’s in the market. I appreciate everyone’s help!

Check out James Allen and Blue Nile.

Some of the best pears have a rounded end more like a round brilliant. Look for distinct facets flashing on/off (going white/black).
Minimize the mushy areas (usually gray areas where its hard to see the outline of a facet). Almost all pointy ends are somewhat
mushy. If the stone has a video like James Allen...look to see more "good" facets lighting up as the stone turns.

Thank you @tyty333. You have been such a great help! I will definitely take all your advice into consideration when I’m doing my search.

Have you use free search feature? There are some great threads on PS around how to shop for pears and the special features of this cut, which I own and love, but appreciate are probably the trickiest to buy for a newbie.
