Questions about nailhead in OEC

Hello! New here and hoping I can get some help learning about nailhead. Is it always present in a diamond that suffers from it, or does it only appear in certain lighting situations or angles? Does anyone have pictures of actual OECs that display it; I seem to be only able to find illustrations or graphics, but few actual pics of videos of OECs with nailhead. Thanks for any help you can offer!

The darkness would be there, annoying, at most times, but it is possible to find some lucky position where it dissapears, methinks - back/side lighting through the pavilion cures all & there must be some lucky positions or line of sight - table (tilted) - direct daylight.

off the cuff

This is one fault of cutting that I cannot quite stand; assuming that it can be repaired with no substantial change of diameter (but loss of weight)

Thanks for your reply. I have a QR stone that is hard to “read.” I can’t tell if it is nailhead or darker facets because of the coloring and depth. I have attached pictures from various angles/lighting conditions. If there are any lighting conditions I should try, I’d welcome that advice, too! It is not what I would call 'nail head'. A diamond with a similarly assymetrical & darkish pavilion was recently talked about around here & recut ('one was slightly darker under the table' - www)

To ModdySmiles who posted her gorgeous antique diamond, thinking it might have nail head, it’s beautiful, very typical, the table area appears slightly darker than a typical MRB because the stone is deeper. I would not recut an antique diamond that is slightly darker under the table, but AV has provided a link to one recently done that made the owner feel like there was an improvement. See AV’s link. Diamonds with significant nailhead are a different story. PS ModdySmiles do you have a SMTB? Can you start a new post and tell us about your beautiful diamond? I love the setting (can you share who crafted it?)! It looks perfect on your hand.

Seconding the sentiment of LightBright here - out of pure selfish desire, my eyes would love to see more of your ring. It is stunning.

Please show off!

Thank you! That’s a relief to know the darkness is somewhat typical for my stone. What’s an SMTB? And sure, I’ll start a new post. Thanks for the compliment!

Thanks—read that thread—I didn’t realize you could recut stones like this to make small changes

@ModdySmalls It is worth asking the / a cutter of the proper specialty; each stone has its own details.
