Hello...I am brand new to the forums and I must say I am overwhelmed by the information. I am an Australian but will be in California for two weeks at the end of February. So I do not have alot of time to get it right. I am looking to purchase either a princess (I am leaning towards this option) or an emerald cut diamond during that time. I think I am going to go with either GOG or Whiteflash for my diamond...the reviews are awesome. I do have some questions which I was hoping that you could help me with;

I have a platnium setting that I want to have melted down so I can use the platnium and have the diamond set in. Will either of the above places do that for me or can you recommend someone?

Also do I need to have the diamond sent to a valuer?

I am so excited; I am looking for a 2 carat beauty; SI1 if it is eye clean and will go to a J if it looks nice and white. If you see anything out there I would appreciate it if you let me know.

Thank you for all of your assistance.

Happy New Year and Welcome to Pricescope.

Here are a few Princess, this one from GOG http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/3356/

and this one from WF http://www.whiteflash.com/princess/Princess-cut-diamond-67218.htm

I think both these vendors will let you send the stones to an appraiser. I would email WF and GOG and let them know what you would like to see. I did not see any J''s, you can search using this tool. http://www.pricescope.com/sift.aspx

I am sorry I don''t know the answer to melting down metal.

Platinum doesn’t recycle quite as easily as gold and it’s difficult to directly rework old metal into a new ring without sending it to a refinery first because it’s so sensitive to contamination. In order to get reasonable efficiency at the refinery it helps for the jewelers to accumulate several pieces that they can send in together so many jewelers will give you a credit for your trade in metal but actually make the piece out of fresh platinum. The financial effect is the same and the results are better.
