Questions about appraisals and insurance

I hope Rocky Talk is the right place for this.

After a jewelry problem I had ( and am still having) I am looking into finally getting some sort of insurance.
If your going to have items insured do you only insure items of a certain value and if so what value would that be?
Will an appraiser tell you that info?
Are there any important things I should know about the process.

most homeowners will cover to a certain value, if you want to insure more than that then you will have to add on. you don't need to insure everything, just what you can't afford to replace if something untoward happened.
