I was given a diamond ring, quite unexpectedly, by the son of a dear friend after her death. She was elderly and had been a family friend for a number of years. I am very touched by the gift.
After at first thinking it costume as I couldn''t believe it would be real (shows you what I know) I had it "appraised" at at local store appraisal event. My question is whether it is safe with the inclusions to reset the diamond. The information is as follows:
Modern round brilliant full cut gem 5.02-5.11 mm in diameter
depth estimated to be 59.3 percent
weight estimated at .48 carat
good symmetry
closed culet
medium to slightly thick frosted girdle edge
table 64 percent
crown angle 33 degrees crown height of 13 1/2 percent
g color
non-fluorescent
small included crystals and pinpoint inclusions under table area and a gossamer planar inclusion along the edge of the gem (SI1)
It is currently in an 18kt gold cathedral style setting that is 8.5 mm wide at the top with diamond in 4 prong white gold head recessed between the raised sides of the ring. the trademark for the setting is NIMA
The appraiser said that the setting really didn''t show off the diamond. I am wondering if the planar inclusion, now hidden by a prong, would be problematic in terms of safety if I had the diamond reset. Thank you for your help.

Any jeweler, worth his salt, should be able to remove the diamond from the present setting and set it in a new ring without any trouble. Of course, if he is not careful, with any diamond, he could chip or break it.
