I am looking for an antique style cushion and am having no luck finding one within my specifications. Most are too big, a few are too small, some are great in every way, but the wrong colour/clarity. If I were to get Sarin info on a stone that was everything I wanted in terms of size, proportion, and cut, would an experienced cutter be able to replicate that cut, and if so, what is the likelihood of getting great results with this approach? Also, would the example stone need to be the same size as what I wanted the final stone to be? I was told that it would be about 20% more to have a stone custom cut - which is almost worth it to me considering how much time I've spent searching for my stone. Thanks in advance for any info/wisdom you can provide.

I''m afraid I can''t answer those questions. However, before you go the custom route, what specifically are you looking for? You might as well have some psers try to exhaust your cushion options and also call up ERD and see if they can source the type of cushion you are looking for.

I did try ERD and Mark was very nice. He found two, one had a large table and was pretty shallow, so I didn't consider it. The other was a G and I wanted to stay in the D-E-F colorless range. Also, I never could get a clear photo, so was uncomfortable taking a chance on it since it looked dark and wonky. I would've preferred something with VG symmetry. When I asked if it would be worth checking for better options, he didn't seem to think there were many. Then I had GOG call one in that looked like it would fit the bill, but when it arrived, it was amazing, but was a modern cushion, so I had to decline. Jonathan is awesome, but he did say it would take a full day of looking through everyone's inventories to find something like what I want. I've since found a place that specializes in these cuts, but am waiting for a third party vendor to inspect them personally - they don't have one that's in my size/price/color range at the moment and they're a manufacturer that doesn't come with any recommendations on PS.

You want something that almost doesn''t exist - high color old cut in a specific size. I have done something like what you are thinking about so yes it is possible. Some other things you might try first:

Have Gary Dutton contact Michael Goldstein in NYC for you. Michael is one of the leading antique dealers in the country. If he doesn''t have an authentic antique close to what you want, although he doesn''t deal in reproductions he knows who does and might inquire.

If that doesn''t work out, ask Gary to talk with Paul Slegers at Infinity. Given a Sarin of a suitable diamond regardless of size, Paul has the expertise and access to the rough from which to cut one for you, although old cuts are not his area of expertise. Even if this is possible this will take a while.

Also talk with Ari at Singlestone. Ari gets nicely-made, authentic reproductions and can also have them custom cut. They are priced higher than the cushions you see around here, along the lines of what you''re saying you''ll pay for custom.

Your best bet is to increase your budget, expand what you''re looking at, and hope you get lucky, but I do understand. I''ve had pretty much the same experience.
