I love the look of halos (well, some halos, anyway), but they''re so popular that I bet you a nickel people will look back in ten years and say, ''Remember the late 2000s, when everyone had to have a halo around their diamond?'' Like the way marquises set in yellow gold were popular in the 1980s. I like marquises, and I like yellow gold, but they do look dated. So I guess it depends on whether you ever intend to change your setting/ upgrade your diamond, or whether you intend to keep this ring forever. If this is your forever ring, will you mind if people look at it in 20 years and think it''s very much of its time, very dated? (It wouldn''t bother me. I never look fashionable to begin with, I don''t mind looking dated, and I don''t care whether anybody else likes my taste. But I think there are a lot of people it would bother.) If you don''t mind upgrading, and you think your financial resources will grow to allow it, then go for the halo. If you don''t mind risking looking dated and you love halos, go for the halo. Otherwise, put the money into the center stone.
Man, now you are making me second guess myself.... I LOVE LOVE LOVE halos and have for years (even before they became so popular, same with cushion cuts) but never want my ring to be compared to a yellow gold marquis (at least the way I look at them now)...

My FF and I have pretty much found the perfect 1.22 cushion cut with the perfect setting (micropave halo- although it is the TINIEST halo I could find, I want it to be tiny, classy, and delicate).

Now I''m wondering if I should just go with a solitaire because I never ever want to upgrade my ring (I''m sentimental and so is he).

Thoughts?! Advice?! HELP!

Cushions and halos are also antiquey. Hey even YG and marquises are coming back around! Same with fashion...who brought back leg warmers?! I mean really.

That''s a good point. It might look dated for a while, but then come back into fashion.

I think you love the look, so you should go for the halo.

I agree with you, Sunnyd! Cushions and halos have a very vintage feel, and I honestly don''t see them going out of style or looking dated down the line. Maybe we''re biased!

But to me, this look is just as classic and timeless as a traditional solitaire. But who knows? I say go with what you love and what speaks to you now... which is clearly a halo setting!

Thanks girls!! I probably still will go for it- I think FF would die if I changed my mind on him now, plus I do still love the tiny halo! I just want to love it forever, ya know?

I agree that halos do have an antiquey feel and look to them. Some no....but they are out there. That would always stay "in style" if that was the look.

I am going to a B and M store on Monday that is suppose to have the biggest selection of designer name engagement rings in the state. Tacori, Vache, Verragio, Ritani ect.. We are going in and trying on everything I can in the hopes to narrow this down. I am really excited because I think this trip will do it for me.

I know alot of people would say that I should find the diamond first than the ring. However like a few posters have said on this thread that the whole ring is very important. I agree with that totally. The whole ring is very important to me. Even if I went solitaire. I would want something a little different in the design of it.

I am confident after finding the setting I want that PS and the great vender''s here will no doubt find me a diamond to fit into the rest of my budget.

SO.........halo or no halo? Haven''t decided. It is clear now though that the whole entire ring is going to be important to me no matter what the budget. I can''t just have a bigger diamond or a gorgeous bling setting.

together it needs to be "the one"

Oooooooooo so excited ........I have actually made progress.........:) Can''t wait for Monday!

Thanks everyone!!!!!

good luck, lauralu! make sure to come back and let us know of your decision!!

Keep us posted Laura!

I can't wait to see what you get! In the past, I would have said -- go for the center stone & concentrate your resources there! Now, I'm not so sure. I realize now that I have to love the ring as a whole. So if you're a halo girl, make your heart sing!

I agree that halos are very very popular... Well, I don't see many in real life, but in the diamond district and even on book covers, magazine ads... They seem everywhere! I wonder if that's because I'm just aware of them more? I, too, once wondered if my new setting would be a fad. But then I also saw that Tffany and HW were doing halos and felt that they were adopted as the new timeless style. When you see it, it's a very clean simple design (even with the extra bling!) such that you won't tire of it, even looking at it every day. Get it while you long for it and ENJOY the carp out of it! Life is too short! I felt that I should be singing when I look down at my e-ring, so I changed it.

I am so excited for you!!!!! And remember, the halo will make your center SING so it's also a boost to your center stone! YAY for you!

i had the same dilemma when I was choosing my ring. I decided to go wth a solitaire and I love it. do i still love a halo, yes. But, I think I will get one for a RHR. Or, one day you can get a halo to re-set the stone. I say invest your money in the best and largest stone you can afford.

personally i would spend more on the center stone... if anything, you can shrink the halo to make the center appear larger

O...............m..................gosh...............I have a decision! That store I went to this afternoon. Had a ton of designer mountings and we went through everyone looking for all the bookmarks I have made of rings I loved via the internet. I tried on a ton of Ritani, Verragio, Michael B, Uneek, Simon G, Diana, Mark silverstien,Vache, Tacori,Christopher designs ect ect ect. I tried on almost every Halo I ever bookmarked and than some by a mile.

However, I kept coming back to one setting that we both just loved on my hand. A solitaire by Verragio. Beautiful, sits up high, which is the surprise. I always said, it cannot sit up high in the setting. I went out of my way to not try them on......holy hannah. I truely think this is the one. It made my heart skip and I got all teary eyed and everything I tried on after, just did not come pair. I think what hugely helped as well is that we found a diamond eternity shard prong band that looked gorgeous with it as well. It is so funny because the internet pic of this mounting is nothing I would have EVER book marked as being something I would like. Never in a million years would I have thought this was a ring I would feel this way about.

It is the total package. I love all of it. We won't be buying a ring that makes me wonder if I will tire of it and want to remount it. The more I tried on Halos the more I wondered that very thing. The more I looked at the verragio the more in love with it I became.

I am just so darned happy that I am not confused over this anymore. Thank you everyone for all of your input. I will get a halo someday though because I truly still love them. Just not for my ER. I would love a right hand gem stone halo. Someday..........one ring at a time...

Now the hunt for the stone begins.........I am so physched...

here is the ring and the band that I am so in love with. The band is a Ritani and I know I can find it for less elsewhere. Plus I want to go 3/4 eternity and not full. maybe custom with GOG?

I would say use the money for a bigger stone. Unless you really have your heart set on a halo. I am about to change my setting away from a halo.

Maisie, why are you taking your stone away from the halo setting? Did you tire of it, was it hard to wear? Quite curious as I like halos quite well even though I do not have one. Thanks!

ditto. are you unhappy with your new setting maisie?
I am not 100% happy with the halo. I can''t put my finger on why though. I just know I want to change it. I suppose I must be quite a laughing stock now, never being able to make up my mind.

All I know is once its right I will know. And then I won''t change it anymore.

I only read as far as this post, but Maisie, you are certainly not a laughing stock. I know the feeling; I feel like that myself. I hope you get the ring of your dreams!
