I am in the market for a ring for my girlfriend and have been given two reccomendations for jewelers here in Manhattan where I live (both on 47th street). I wanted to check to see if anyone here has had any dealings with either. They are:

R & R Jewelers
SH Zell and Sons

Thanks for your feedback...

Ben, try Philmar Jewelers on Fifth and 47th, the corner building on the left side. I used them and Phil specifically is WONDERFUL!

Also people who seemed helpful on 47th were Firenze Jewelers, ask for Gabrielle (she's so helpful and can get you Sarin reports on the stone). Another place to try is KLK jewelers (ask for Rosa or Elena, very helpful) Mimi So has some great people, as well as Albert Jewelers, and Neil at Shenoa really tried to help and gave me a competitive price.

If you want an independant guy, I have a contact who is highly recommended, and I can offer you his info and he'll go to all ends to find you a great stone. PM me for more info if you like. I hope this helps!

Shenoa throws up red flags. They sell on eBay. Some of their positive feedback is from people who received replacement stones. Their website offers lower quality color/clarity/cut diamonds. Unless their store is different in person, I'd be wary of them.

PQ good point! My dealing with them was all positive, down to the competitive price. I don't know to what extend their involvement is with E-bay, but their store is larger than some on 47th, and does quite well.

They have pretty good business there, and in my dealing with them they were fast, curteous, totally helpful and very professional. No reason to suspect a thing, but always take my advice with a grain of salt. One happy (almost) customer does not make a good vendor!

I was unfortable around Shenoa.
Two salespeople came running outside when I was browsing the window & tryed to usher me in... when I told them I wasn't interested in coming inside, a saleslady spewed on about ring basics & shoved a brochure in my hand.

I just had a very positive experience with Mark at Engagement Rings Direct. He has a background with the GIA & is professional and pleasant to deal with- no high pressure sales routine. I found him through the Pricescope search engine. He has an office on Fifth/47th. I told him what I was interested in & he got me a few stones to compare.
His prices are great but he doesn't give you all the info that other i-net vendors do (reports, etc) so unless you're confident in your knowledge, maybe he's not the best source.

ps, Mark's also gone out of his way, helping me create a custom mounting for the diamond and a matching wedding band.

Just my .02

Best of luck to you!

Thanks for the other reccomendations. So no one knows anything about the two Jewelers I mentioned at the top of the thread?

I'M USING SH ZELL NOW AND CAN'T BE HAPPIER. 1.74 PRINCESS CUT/F/VS2/ EXCELLENT POLISH EX SYMETRY. HIGH PRICE BUT I BELIEVE THE STONE IS WORTH IT. YOU CAN'T HAGGLE THAT MUCH WITH THEM, THAT'S BECAUSE HIS STONES ARE CLEARLY WORTH IT. I USED SH ZELL AND IANELLI DIAMONDS.
