My husband has agreed to an upgrade. Yay! I would like to get a Halo with a 1 carat center stone. My questions are

1. Do you wear it every day?
2. Does it slip around your finger?
3. Does it get caught easily on things or do you find that you are hitting it often?

I love the look but am not sure if a solitaire would be a better choice for me.

I have a plain shank halo. Which I think is MUCH more lifestyle friendly than a halo with a pave shank.

That said, I still do not wear it in the house. I put it on when I am getting dressed to leave the house, and take it off when I come home.
Whether or not it slips has to do with your hands, and how big it is on you. Mine doesn't slip. But I have squishy fingers, not bony ones, and nothing spins on me much.
It doesn't get caught or banged often as I don't wear it in the house. It's not set too high. It's a cathedral shank.

The best advice I can give you is... save up and buy the very BEST quality you can. In this market that means about 4,000 in platinum. And platinum is the best metal for pave.

I've only had mine for 1.5 years but it's been very wearable and low-maintenance. I only take it off to shower, do the dishes, or move furniture. It does not snag or bump into things, though I wish my ring were so big that I'd have that problem heh.

1. Do you wear it every day?
No. If I had an office or desk or sales job, I would. And I'm single, so I'm not wearing is as an e-ring or wedding set.

2. Does it slip around your finger?
No, not if it fits correctly. But some people have larger knuckle and small finger, and have to install a "horseshoe" or sizing balls or "arthritic shank to snug up the fit. Or possible a flat-bottomed euro shank would cure the spin.

3. Does it get caught easily on things or do you find that you are hitting it often?
No. A very tall solitaire is much worse. The halo setting is protection for the stone, unless it's the type of setting that has tiffany-type prongs sticking up out of a halo.

Thanks so much for the replys. I still have not made up my mind. If I go with the solitaire I can get a bigger stone and maybe do the halo at a later time. Decisions....decisions.

If it were me, I'd get a larger solitaire now and wait to see how you feel about a halo a couple of years down the line. The "halo revival" has been going on for maybe 5-7 years at this point, and I'm curious to see whether it will be "trendy" or timeless. You can always change the setting, but the cost of diamonds has only gone in one direction (way up) in my experience, and better to get as much diamond as you can now, IMO. By way of example, I got my upgrade ring in December 2007. A diamond with the exact same specs as mine now sells for nearly 45% more than what I paid 5 years ago. It's likely to be a lot easier to buy more diamond today than a few years from now.

BIGGER solitaire

If it is an option for you to get a bigger diamond, and get a halo later, I would do that. Curious tho, how much of a bigger diamond are you able to get if you don't get the halo? A very sizable difference?

Adding another data point:

1. Do you wear it every day?
Usually, but not 24/7. I leave it at home if I'm going to the gym, and I take it off for most kind of housework, showers, and when I'm sleeping, because I don't like sleeping with jewelry on. My halo ring is on the modest side for PS, I think - the centre stone is 3/4 carats (with pave 1/3 down the shank on each side). The whole point of my *upgrade* was the halo setting; I wouldn't have been interested in another diamond solitaire, no matter the size.

2. Does it slip around your finger?
Mine does, because I need to have it re-sized. I don't think that there's anything inherent about the design that would make it slip around more than a solitaire setting would.

3. Does it get caught easily on things or do you find that you are hitting it often?
No, not really. I hooked it a bit when reaching into my pants pocket when the ring was still quite new to me, but I've adapted and it's not really an issue anymore.

I would get a larger solitaire at first. DSS sets in quickly for some of us around here and what seems like a large stone at first quickly looks small on the finger. I'd hate to see you purchase a smaller stone then spend lots of money on a quality setting only to find that you wished you had gone larger in the beginning. True, a halo makes the center appear larger than it actually is, but if the halo trend goes south and you decide to re-set in the future you'll be doing so with a smaller stone and visually it will look much smaller sans the halo kwim?

Have you considered a three stone ring? They are timeless, classic, and give a ton of finger coverage...maybe more than a halo. Just throwing that out there. ;))

I would go for the larger diamond. I had a 1 carat in a halo and I eventually upgraded to a larger diamond. I wish I never wasted the money on a halo.

I have had my halo for 2 years and have cut back on wearing it. It is comfortable, but my job is very hands on -- I can see little dings in the millgraining around the halo, especially on the corners. I HATE the idea of damaging such a beautiful and intricate setting. :nono:

Now my solitaire is my go-to ring. I wear it probably 5 days a week, and the halo twice/week.

I suspect halos are a trend and will eventually lose their popularity. I would get a larger solitaire, especially as it doesn't seem like you're just DYING for a halo. :))

Thanks again for all the help. I think I will probably go with the solitaire. I have always loved them and I can wear it with stack rings. I do want to be able to wear it as much as possible. As far as how much bigger that is yet to be determined by hubby. :wink2:

I agree with a bigger solitaire at first....I work in the bridal industry and at least 3/4 of the brides have halos. I wonder if it is a trend or something that will stick around.

No. I switch rings often. But I have worn it approx 2-3/week for two years.
2. Does it slip around your finger?
Occasionally. However, since the head is "larger" with the halo, it doesn't slip to the other side (palm side) of my finger. It usually just tilts a bit.. This happens with my solitaire, too, so I don't think the halo changes anything.
3. Does it get caught easily on things or do you find that you are hitting it often?
Nope, doesn't get caught on anything. Never has.

I agree with the other ladies' sentiments, though. Go for the bigger diamond, and just get yourself a simple affordable solitaire. You can always "upgrade your setting" later :))

The hotter the trend the colder it will become.
Think polyester pants and mullet hairdos.
I think todays hot halos will share the destiny of the marquise cut.

If you like marquise or halos, and don't care what others think, get one and enjoy it.
If you are sensitive to what's currently in style and plan to wear the ring for many decades, as the OP apparently is, don't jump on the latest bandwagon.

A simple solitaire will never go out of style and you'll get a better diamond for the budget.
