Hi Mara,
I was reading if your other post that you had your prongs shaved down, and I love how they look!

What''s involved in shaving the prongs? Does the diamond have to be removed, and then resetted? Or, can they shave the prongs without touching the diamond? If so, any risk of damaging it? Sorry but I''m totally clueless. My prongs are more like round blobs and the more I look at them, the more I dislike them (hide too much of the center stone). However, I''m also concerned about loosing the stone because I read that your stone did become "loose"...was it obvious to you (ie you can see it moving?) or only to the jeweler?

Any other words of wisdom? Thanks!

Hi there..! Yes I had my prongs shaved down, a few times on different heads. They would have to remove the diamond, reshape the prongs and do whatever mods to the head, then re-set the diamond. I would imagine that you would not want them doing work to the head while the diamond is set. And yes there is a risk of damaging the stone or the head any time a stone is set or removed and re-set etc. What kind of risk, I don''t really know.

Prongs are a total pet peeve of mine so I always pay special attention to them...and anything I have had made since my original e-ring head, I always am pretty anal about the prongs being as tiny as possible. In terms of losing the stone from shaving the prongs...I think that my old head metal may have retained ''memory'' of the original stone and so putting other stones into it over time just didn''t work very well. I would think if they just shaved down the tips of the prongs, not the divot area where the stone rests into the head and cuts into the prongs that it would be okay. But I would definitely ask the jeweler about this...you should find someone you''d like to work with and then ask them all these questions.

Do you have insurance on the ring and stone? You might want to if you are going to have someone play around with it...I think it''s a good idea anyway! Good luck.
