Hi Everyone;
I have been looking around at diamonds because I am with a woman now that I know I will marry.
She told me she likes pear shaped diamonds and I went looking around at sizes yesterday, I found one that was 1.5 carats and it looked like a rock to me. But it was a solitare and sort of looked plain without side stones.
Does the price go out a lot when a ring has side stones as well as the center stone? Also is it possible to get a pear shaped diamond with a band of diamonds channel set in the band? How cost do they run for the setting itself? Thanks all

You can get whatever type of setting you want. You can even have a setting custom made. But there is a lot that factors into the final price.
Keeping in mind that the amount of side diamonds, carat weight, color, clarity, type of metal used, maufacturer of the setting... and so on adds into the price.
It could be a difference of a few hundred or a few thousand dollars.
You can get an idea of what is out there by doing searches on the internet for different types of settings and going into different jewelry stores to see what is available also.

Hi thanks for the advice about looking around. I fogot to put in my orginal post this Q. The diamond I saw was a 1.56 carat in a pear shape and it looked like a real nice size. Will diamonds of the same carat wieght look very different in size? It was from Mimi So in NYC, and they seem like a reputable jeweler. Thanks

Two diamonds of the same carat weight can look different in size. It depends on how good (or bad) the diamond was cut by the diamond cutter.
ie: if the diamond is cut too shallow, too deep..ect...

I am just talking if you compare 2 stones of the same shape. In your case, pear stones.

I think most people on this board will advise you to choose the stone separately from the setting, rather than buying a preset ring. That way you'll have more control over what you're getting.

It's more difficult to choose a pear than a round, because there are more variables, such as length-to-width ratio--that is, do you want a long, skinny pear or a short, fat one? It's harder to find a well-cut pear, and even the best-cut pear won't sparkle as much as the best cut round. However, they do tend to look bigger than rounds, and there is that shape, which has its own unique charm.

I thought I'd show a pic of my pear even though it's a lot smaller than what you're looking for - you can ignore the marquise diamonds but it has the channel-set diamonds. She may not like the asymmetrical setting but as a pear-lover, chances are she's creative and enjoys something different than the majority

I am sorry, but that is not a pear. That looks like a trilliant. Still a lovely ring, but not a pear.

I think it is just the reflection of light on the lower left and on the upper right table along with the reflection from the lower right prong which is making it look like a trilliant but it is really a pear.

You can go to www.gemappraisers.com and use the DIY Cut Grading system to check the cut grade of pear shapes you are considering. In the left hand tool bar, click on DIY. On the next page, select Pear Shape and the carat weight. On the next page, you'll need to enter specs on each diamond, but the DIY system will assess the Cut Class for you. It's a great tool to help weed out lower quality cuts. You can also use the Cut Class info to get pricing information as well.

While you can screen Fancy shapes (pear is a Fancy cut) to look for the better quality diamonds, you really need to see the diamond in person and have the diamond evaluated for light leakage with an Ideal Scope. Specs only go so far in the search for a great performing Pear.

I very much agree with the idea of matching a pear shape center with side stones. Small ones should not break the bank: the price per carat drops with size... It may be a good idea to get info on what the sides cost by themselves and compare with the cost of the setting with side-stones - if yo want to buy the package from the same place. Sometimes these 'already in place' sides are somewhat more expensive than one could expect. Pear shapes should be less expensive than rounds, and this goes for sides and center as well.

Thank you Pyramid, you're right - it is a lovely little pear ring that my hubby designed almost 10 years ago

It is a sparkly pear, and not very long, so I can see how Trinity and Summergirl could make that mistake from my blurry photo. Someone in "show me the ring" asked me to post some more pics so I'll try to take some clearer shots & put them there.

Hey Phil! Mimi So had some lovely things in their store (been there a few times), but I would venture to say that the 1.56 won't be as comparably priced as you could find on your own through the internet retailers, etc...If you are looking to have it set and get the side stones there too, maybe it's worth the expense to have them do it from start to finish. We used a B&M jeweler and spent a bit more too...

From what I noticed, they are a very chic, small boutique of diamonds, but out of all the stores on 47th, they oddly seem to have the least amount of bright lighting...It's like walking into a cellar or den...LOL (sorry, they were very helpful, but I wonder what their mark up is on that stone?) Either way, good luck...

Have you considered pear shaped sidestones (point facing outwards) or my favorite with pears, little round diamonds that compliment it...?

By the way, I noticed a 1.57ct F, VS1 with Ideal cut proportions from WhiteFlash at $9,669...is that about what you are quoted or so? I guessed on color and clarity in the middle...(1.41 l/w ratio)

thanks christarose for the pic of your ring, its a beautiful ring, I like the channel set diamonds with the pear shaped, it looks awesome.
Also thanks for the info about the diamond Neriez. Yeah the price of the diamond was 11,000 it was platium and had little bagette diamonds on the side. I think the idea of round side diamonds is a good idea. I will keep my eyes out for them.
Yeah Mimi So's shop is way different then the other jewelers in 47th, they are not high pressure salespeople there.

I dont know about buying a diamond on the internet. I know you all bash Tiffanys about being over priced but i have a family member who works there and can get me a discout and Id love to get it there. Then she could show it off even more so then she has ever imagined b/c not only will it be a beautiful ring but also it will be from Tiffanys.

Phil, like I said, in the end, you can get a bigger diamond, or whatever, but when you like and trust the pace you buy your diamond, I think that has a worth that is incalculable. Mimi So wasn't AT ALL high pressure sales, and they were sort of laid back and elegant. I love their store the most out of all the stores on 47th for the atmosphere alone! Tiffany's or Mimi So, I think are both going to give you that satisfaction of trust and good quality, so go for either one that has the stone you want. Of course, i always recommend getting the best cut for the least amount!!!

there are so many possibilites, side stones that go nice with P.S. diamonds , could be trillians ,Tapered Baguettes,2 samller p.s diamonds going side ways along the shank, small round stones in the shank.
It really all depends on your prefrences and Your budget.
