Question about this diamond and setting

Hello everyone, I am in the market for an engagement ring.

This is the setting I have been looking at: http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/pave/14k-white-gold-graduated-pave-engagement-ring-item-22538

I want to get a diamond that would look good with this setting. You can view a few samples of diamonds of what customers have gotten with this setting. One of the samples of the K color quality looks quite yellow in the setting. From looking at their lose cut diamonds, I felt this K color quality sample pic looked quite a bit more yellow than the others.

I want to get something that doesn't appear as yellow as their sample picture. I found one that was in my price range that appears more silver color to my eyes than yellow tinted: http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.82-carat-k-color-vvs1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-491024

Because I can't see it in person, I wanted to see what you all felt about it. I know this says it is color quality K, but to my eyes it looks better than that. It almost has a silverish color to it rather than yellow and I want to know if that would match the setting better since it is white gold. I don't have a ton of money to spend and would like to keep it below $2400. For the color, weight, and the lack of imperfections I saw in the diamond, I thought this was a pretty good one at this price. But again, since I can't see it personally, I just want to know what more experienced people (you all) would think in terms of this color matching the setting.

That diamond is heavily tinted brown to my untrained eyes. I would avoid it will show even more in a white gold setting. Keep searching you will find the one.

There is not a scenario where a K isn't going to look tinted against the G/H side stones and melee in your chosen setting. I personally would not consider going with a K in this setting.

I like tyty333's suggestion of an H with a lower clarity, as long as well cut and eye clean. I would consider I colour as well, but wouldn't go lower than that with white metal and G/H side stones.

Hi Carboncube,

I would agree with the others that you should go up in color and down in clarity. Just making the suggested switch to H and VS1 or SI1 will give you better choices. I am new to this forum, but I have many years experience in the jewelry field. I have a J engagement ring, VS1 clarity and it faces up nicely. This is partially due to a medium fluorescence and it's set in yellow gold. Best wishes... I hope you find something good. :twirl:

High crown I do not think the numbers will not stack up for many on this site cut is king

Every hundredth counts, especially since GIA rounds their numbers.

Did you scroll down to what the author further states?? First he writes this:

General Ideal Proportions For Round Brilliant Cut

Table % 52.4% to 57.5%
Depth % 56.88% to 63.92%
Crown Angle 33.7° to 35.8°
Pavilion Angle 40.2° to 41.25°
Girdle Thickness Thin – Medium
Culet Size None

THEN he goes on to say:

My Personal Criteria is Even Stricter Than Both GIA & AGS Labs

Over the years of examining and analyzing diamonds, I had tabulated my own set of parameters for selecting a ideal cut round diamonds. While it is modeled after Tolkowsky’s initial findings and studies from GIA/AGS, my parameters are much more stringent.

Here’s why… This tighter set of parameters helps to filter diamonds that are the cream of the crop and I personally use it to handpick diamonds for myself. To save time and weed out the badly cut diamonds, I strongly recommend that you apply these parameters into your own diamond search.

Table: 54-57%
Depth: 61-62.5%
Crown angle: 34-35 degrees
Pavilion angle: 40.6-41 degrees

I would agree with his parameters and say you could go to a table of 58%

A table of 59% is large so you will get a brighter diamond but at the expense of fire.

Thanks for your reply. I did some more searching based upon those parameters and found this one. What do you think?:

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.70-carat-h-color-vs1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-429873

This is reaching the upper bounds of my budget and don't want to go much past that. At 0.71 carat, are these fine tuned proportions going to be worth the cost visibly speaking? Or are they more applicable to larger diamonds? I am just wondering focus I should put towards the proportions compared to size in making a good looking ring.

It's ok. The CA and PA are within the ideal parameters, but it's nicer to have a steeper CA with a shallower PA and vice versa. Could be a nice stone though.

This one looks awesome. It's $2970, but it's 0.76 carats. Look at the dimensions for true size. It's the largest out of the ones you've been looking at. Measures 5.84 x 5.79 x 3.61. The numbers are great.

To answer your Q, the cut is what gives the diamond the sparkle, brilliance and fire. Sacrificing a bit on size for a better cut diamond will mean it will be visually more pleasing. Well cut diamonds will often look bigger than poorly cut diamond of the same size and carat weight.

That one does indeed look nice. I think I will go with that one. That slight imperfection halfway through the table should not be visible correct?

It should not be visible, but for your peace of mind you can verify with them on the phone. For the most part VS2's are very safe in terms of not being able to see an inclusion.

If you're interested in that diamond, put it on hold ASAP (or just buy it!). For some reason JA's diamonds tend to get snapped up.

I just placed the order for the setting and diamond. It should make for one happy girl. Thanks again for your help.

That should be a beautiful ring. Congratulations!

Congratulations!!! Very exciting. :appl:

I think it will look gorgeous in the setting you chose.

If you remember, come back and post pictures of the ring and some hand shots after you propose! :))

Oh my goodness it's absolutely stunning!!

I was so-so on the setting, but seeing your photo I think it's totally gorgeous! Your photo blows all the photos on the JA website out of the water, lol.

If you remember come back and post some hand shots after you propose. She's going to love it! :appl:

That looks GORGEOUS!!!! Well done!!! She will love it. Please come back with hand shots!!
