Hi all,

We often hear that ''steep deep'' diamonds are cut that way to retain weight so the cutter can get more for the diamond. These diamonds do not benefit the buyer. Why then would a diamond cutter cut a shallow/shallow stone? Wouldn''t this be needlessly lowering the ultimate carat weight of the stone and thus the cutter''s ultimate profit? I guess I''m just curious why a diamond cutter would ever cut a shallow/shallow stone. Thanks for your insight!

maximuizing the polish stone size for the rough. Depending on the starting shape of the rough, a shallow/shallow might be the way to go.

Laila619- I agree that if you read a lot of threads here you will be led to believe all diamond cutters have no interest whatsoever in beauty, only profits.

Of course a business needs to be profitable to survive, but it''s simply not true to assume profit as the only motive in all diamond cutters.

The best cutters are able to use the rough that comes out of the ground to maximize BOTH beauty and profits.
Sometimes that leads to a stone cut more shallow than others.

Its not as straightforward as all that.....It greatly depends on the shape and quality of the rough that the cutter has to work with, they need to plan to get the most effective cut out of the stone ( for looks and profit), many points to consider such as the inclusions and their minimizing, where they are located on the rough and desired eventual clarity grade achievable for example, colour, sometimes a shallow shallow is the best way to go taking into account all of the above and more.
