Hi all:
I have recently started viewing this forum to learn about diamonds because I knew that my boyfriend and I would be getting engaged soon, and this past weekend he proposed. Although I was leaning towards a solitaire with channel-set diamonds, he found a three stone ring at Fortunoff that really appealed to him and that he thought I would really like. It''s the Past Present Future style, and he was told that the setting is a Fortunoff exclusive. I really do like the ring, and it''s actually bigger than what I was originally looking at.

Now, the thing is that he received only one certificate which was the Fortunoff diamond grading report for the center stone. He said that they told him the two side stones were 0.25 carats each and the same color and clarity as the center stone. Are we supposed to have received certificates for the 2 sidestones as well? I''m not sure how this works. Also, it wasn''t an AGS or GIA certificate that he received, does this matter?

Here are the specs for the center stone

5.63-5.70 x 3.45
0.70 carat
61% depth
63.4% table
med-slightly thick girdle
very small cutlet size
VS1 clarity
E color
no fluoresence

I will try to post a picture. I think the yellow tinge on the right stone is because of the flower in the background. (I hope!)

Hi, DMartins, Congratulations on your engagement!

I just love that ring! What a great mounting!

Well, an in-house certificate is definitely not a GIA report, but maybe Fortunoff''s name carries some clout. Someone else will have to address this issue.

I can tell you that it is perfectly normal that the side stones do not have reports. Getting lab reports on these little guys is not cost efficient.

Again...I think your ring is gorgeous!

E-VS1 better had GIA or AGS report - the grades are farely high. And I am not at all crazy about the stats of the center stone. Usually the cost of diamonds with seller''s grades is lower than for similar grades cetified by a lab - but more ften than not, there is good reason for this too.

Second what Widget says about the sidestones lacking certs - although, IMO - so does the center stone since this the seller''s grading. Online it happens to find diamonds below 30pts with lab reports, because the extra guarantee means more - but in local stores, this is allot less common.

The setting is nice.... but would rather have one (or even the same?) with a safe bet for the center stone, as it accounts for most of the cost. Better proportions for that diamond wouldn''t hurt either. Maybe it is nice, but it may help seeing what ''ideal cut'' is all about in comparison. Do they have any such stones in the shop for comparison?

Because of the surprise diamond on the side and the ''wirework detail, it remainds me of this one below...

I wish there was a better side-view for it. The solitaire version of the same setting is shown better from the side.

Thanks for your input widget and valeria.. So, I guess if I didn''t already get a lab certificate for the stone, it is non-existent and going back to Fortunoff would be useless?

Also, I forgot to mention that they told my boyfriend that the center stone has 100+ facets (he doesn''t remember the exact number they said). I''m not sure if that makes a difference as far as the specifications are concerned.

dmartians..do you love your ring? if you love it and it looks beautiful to you, why worry about a piece of paper now? The certs are important and helpful when buying a diamond but there are beautiful uncertified stones out there. I used to own an Old european cut stone that didn't have a cert. i had an indepentant appraisal done on the stone to get the stats which was all i needed and could use it for insurance purposes. It was a gorgeous stone even though it had never been sent to GIA. If you love your ring, don't worry about it. you can always take it to an independant appraiser which is wise whether a stone has a cert or not. They will be able to tell you all the info that you'd want to know. it looks beautiful in the pics..

ETA: i really would suggest taking it to an independant appraiser to verify the specs that you were given. I would think he'd want to make sure he got what he paid for..

if the center stone is branded,in this case most likely b/c your BF said... it has 100+ facets (i.e. a Leo cut ?) it should come with a lab report of some kind. IGI maybe?

You''re right.. I do love my ring. For some reason I thought that the diamond should have a lab certification, but I''m not going to go crazy over it. I will take it to an appraiser and we are planning on insuring the ring.

I have no idea about the type of cut of the ring, but he is sure that they did tell him about the 100+ facets. I may call them up to find out some more details about this, since I am curious.

I would call and ask, as it can never hurt. I think your mouting is very lovely, the gallery is just dreamy!
