Question about diamond

I am new to this engagement ring thing so I shopped Kay's zales Jarred's etc and ended up online at James Allen it seems to have much better prices first ordered a ring with a 1.01 diamond VS1 clarity I COLOR diamond IGI
Price: $3,810.00 the cut was Good then I started reading about how important cut was and talked to the james Allen experts and they convinced me to switch to a
Round 0.91 carat H SI1 clarity diamond GIA
Price: $4,090.00 excellent cut and was wondering if I made a bad choice since it's obviously a smaller diamond, did they upsell me or was it the right choice just curious to your opinions and was also wondering how much smaller this diamond will be than the original one I ordered. Thanks for the help

Not knowing more about the diamond you purchased from James Allen we can't really tell you if you made a wise decision, although I'm guessing that a "good" cut diamond from Jared/Zales would not be of great quality. If you tell people here your budget, post a link to the JA diamond that you purchased, they can tell you if you picked a great stone or they can help you find a great stone within your budget.
