I have a 1.8 ct VS1 I RB. I notice that face up it's completely eye clean and gorgeous, but sometimes when the sun hits it at a certain angle it appears a bit cloudy. Like if I turn it to the side and look at it from an angle it seems like I can see the carbon in it. Is this normal? It's a GIA VS1. Is it only graded in the face up position? I thought by buying a VS1 I would avoid something like this. Any input is much appreciated :D

Not sure if this has any impact, but any idea whats the florescence on your diamond ?

Has it been like this since you remember? Have you given it a good clean lately?

The upper girdle facets of my VS1 stone refused to bling for months until I found out that very tiny dirt was collected inside the head of ring which was reflected on the facets making it look dull. The diamond literally 'woke up' after I had the jeweller cleaned it professionally.

There is no flouresence and I noticed it right away after receiving it. I just wonder if its graded wrong or something.

Maybe I'm just really sensitive to imperfections

clarity grades are assigned based on the face up view. It could be that you have really good eyesight. Other reasons I could think of are a dirty stone and mounting.

I don't know the correct terms, but the size of the inclusions is kind of proportional to the size of the diamond, so as diamonds get larger it might be possible to see inclusions in a diamond that has a high clarity grade. A 1ct VS1 or VS2 might be eyeclean but a 2ct or 3ct of the same grade might not be. That info is in some of the tutorials on clarity, and also in some of the old threads here.

What types of inclusions are on the inclusion plot? I suppose twinning wisps and internal graining might be more obvious when the diamond is tilted.

There are probably others, as well. Found one more:
The same size and shape inclusion under the table will often be a lower clarity grade than the same inclusion off to the side.
Inclusions in the center are easier to see with a 10x loupe.

and then Diamonds by Lauren's David immediately contradicts that:
GIA will grade the diamond''s clarity based on the presence of imperfection- NOT it''s visibility. Therefore the placement of an inclusion ( unless it breaks the skin) does not impact the clarity grade....in my experience.
That''s why we can find eye clean I1''s and non eye clean VS2''s

If buying a diamond long-distance, you have to ask lots of questions and make sure that you and the vendor are both using the same definition of eye-clean.

Carbon is black spots...are you seeing black chunks? If so, your diamond is not VS1. If you mean the diamond doesn't look totally transparent, then it it probably the sun's rays shining in the stone.

A GIA VS1 should not have eye visible inclusions. Most actually require a bit of hunting around to find things even with magnification. I think it's fair to speculate that you are seeing something else and I second the comment above that a good cleaning is the first step.

I also wonder about the cut of the stone. Can you give us all the measurements off the diagram of the stone?

Thank you for all the input so far, I will grab the GIA report and post the inclusions and dimmensions.. I'll be back in a bit.

After looking at the plot, I really think I'm seeing the tiny cloud and crystal clump. I only see it from an angle when the sun hits it but I think that what it is. I will take it in to be cleaned and see if that helps.
