I have noticed, when visiting some jewelry stores, that some diamonds are slightly greenish or bluish. I mentioned this at Robbins Bros. the first time we went ring shopping, and the guy basically denied what I was seeing...

But now that I have seen it several times at various stores, I wonder what it is that causes that. Of course I wouldn''t expect a straight answer from the store now, as in my experience they have been less than forthcoming, but is it fluorescence I wonder?

Sounds like flourescence.

you sure you weren't wearing a blue or green shirt? It could easily be light reflecting if you were looking at it from the top, perhaps blue paint on the cieling or if you took it outside it could be the sky reflecting or a tree?

Or something on the other side of the diamond-like a blue pad or green wall, etc-if you were looking from the side.

I doubt you would have noticed fluo consistently in several different stores under the in-house lighting, but it could be possible I suppose, but it should not be the case based on my studies of jewelry store lighting and the % of diamonds with strong+ fluo.

Oh. Hee, hee, thanks for confirming the obvious!

WorkingHard, I was noticing it on only one diamond out of all the ones in the case, and I was wearing a blue shirt at Robbins Bros, but not every time I saw it. Could it be that I am just really sensitive to color?

yeah, it really doesn''t make sense that it would be fluor. mainly because most b&m''s still have the old thinking that all fluor is bad (not true) so they don''t readily stock them. the chances of coming across even one is pretty slim. secondly, fluor is not readily detectable to the naked eye until it gets to a pretty high level (strong, very strong) and even then, it''s not perceptable in all lighting conditions.

If you aren''t too experienced with looking at diamonds then it could also be caused by constant fire as a result of the pinpoint halogen lighting in the stores. But I really don''t believe that jewelry store lights have enough fluo to really create that sort of appearance consistently, even in strong fluo, which shouldn''t have been the norm. I will go and do a quick look up and see, but that is what I recall from my understanding of normal Jewelry store lights.

I don't mean to offend but I am a little confused. You said in yoru original post

"But now that I have seen it several times at various stores, I wonder what it is that causes that."

Then you said " I was noticing it on only one diamond out of all the ones in the case, and I was wearing a blue shirt at Robbins Bros, but not every time I saw it. Could it be that I am just really sensitive to color?"

If it was only that one diamond then it might be possible, I would want to know more about the jewelry store lighting, perhaps it had a high amount of fluo in the diamond and some fluo in the lighting, or perhaps some sunlight was reaching it with very strong fluo. but that wouldn't be my first guess.

My inclinations is that either it was an ideal cut and you were wearing more blue than you realized, or it was a very poor cut and maybe light was leaking and you were seeing blue from a cloth beneath it?

Also, no offense at all because perhaps you are, but before you start thinking you are super color sensitive look for other explanations

You don't want to scare yourself into buying a D with no fluo when it isn't necessary

Just reread your post...I doubt that it was flouro in several different stores either. I do think that your blue shirt would have something to do with it.

Oh, ok well in the two instances that I remember clearly, I wore a blue shirt at Robbins Bros, which had a lot of windows, and I wore a black and white dress while looking at the window display of another store. I guess it''s the sunlight?

oh, and at Robbins Bros, my boyfriend confirmed that the one I asked the guy about did seem more bluish than the others... And he wasn''t just trying to agree with me, he''s not like that

Well it certainly could be, not surprising at all if it has strong fluo and sunlight. but who knows for sure without a report or some more info! did you like it? I personally would love to have a D with very strong Fluo!

Below is a quote I have highlighted from Oldminer a very well respected appraiser who posts on this forum, it is a quote I have taken from the linked post below. It may be the body color of the diamond you are seeing. Most people think as a diamond goes from D down G, H, I, J and so on that it gets yellower but yellow is only one of the hues and there are others.

QUOTE: Let's consider ONLY grading the color of diamonds from D through M. There are several hues that are graded in the standard GIA scale which include Yellow, Brown Yellow, Brown, Greenish Yellow and all the slightly more mixed hues of these color types too.
