On an AGS cert, how do you tell what the specific inclusion is within a specific stone if it doesn''t seem to match up with the symbols in the key box? It seems that often this is the case, making it tricky to tell, as opposed to a GIA cert which gives you a specific list for the individual stone.

I am not sure I understand your question. On the older AGS certs they did not have the large list of symbols on each cert that they have now. They show examples now of each of the possible types of sybols on the cert and then you look at the plot to see which are used.

If you are looking for exact replicas of the list you will not normally see them. For example the symbol for a crystal is a round circle in red, but on the plot the "circle" will be the shape of the crystal not necessarily a round symbol.

If you have a question you should be able to ask your jeweler to interpret for you, assuming of course that he has the proper training. With a little experience it is not at all difficult.
