Question about adjusting settings

So I just got engaged last month. (yay!) but we had to use a family stone that is slightly smaller than I would've wanted, which is okay because we already discussed that in 10 years or so some sort of upgrade is acceptable. I just have to wait and take a chill pill for a bit. My jeweler who made the halo setting for my grandmothers stone says they'll have to redo the prongs but the setting can hold a bigger stone. It just can't be excessive like fitting a 2 carat stone into this setting that sits around a .47 ct stone. According to them a .75 (which is what I wanted) would be just fine.

However. I am seeing online that platinum prong work is 300 to 600 dollars and what I am unsure about is, is that per prong or all prongs generally? According to my understanding the ring is 1 peice so the head itself can't be changed (boo) Do you think I MIGHT be able to go from 4 double prongs to 4 claw prongs to hopefully lessen the cost of prong replacement when I upgrade the diamond?
I'm asking my jeweler all these questions in may when I go visit my fiance and have my ring inspected. I guess I'm just looking to see if anyone else may have done these things and might know already.
Thank you!

Most of the cost is in the labor, not the metal, and claw prongs actually require more skill to do so might actually increase the cost.

I would be surprised that a .47 halo could hold a .75 stone unless they set the .75 high (which
doesn't usually look very good). Is the setting made yet? I would not put double prongs
on a .47 stone. Double prongs take up more surface space.

Oh that's true. I didn't consider that. I was more worried when they took the prongs out that they couldn't be changed to 4.

Yes the setting has been made unfortunately. At first they told me no a larger stone would not fit but the stone already sits kind of half inside and half up on top and so I think that's the reason they feel like it's okay to put a slightly bigger stone in there later. It just cannot be excessively large because the setting isn't big. They told me they could put in up to a carat and just redo my prongs. but I thought it best to keep it around .60 to .75 so that it doesn't sit up too high or look too crazy.

Do you have a photo of the setting?

Do you have a photo of the setting?

I do. My photographer took this one at our engagement pictures. Its from the side though. I could take one from the top myself if I need to but somehow it always turns out plasticky on my phone. Here's the other though. not sure if it will show up

If you are talking that you might upgrade in ten years, probably not worth the worry about the setting now because you might want a completely different setting in 10 years when you upgrade your stone. Also, because you might want to keep your current ring and then have a whole new ring made for your upgrade stone.

I think it's stunning. Personally if I was you I would enjoy it as it is, it is a very pretty ring and not think about the upgrade. The setting might not look right with a bigger stone. I know they said they could do it but it might ruin the asthetic to have a stone sticking up more. An upgrade sounds lovely and how exciting for when the time comes but 10 years is a long time and tastes change. I agree with the poster who said by the time that comes around you will probably be looking at a whole new ring and you will probably want to keep this one the same for sentimental reasons anyway.
It's exquisite and perfect as it is IMO.

Yeah, I would enjoy it as it is, and worry about the upgrade when you come to it. If I was upgrading, I would want a completely different halo because if you put a bigger stone in that size halo, well, you'll still just have the same amount of finger coverage that you originally had, so I'm not sure how much of a difference you would really notice. And yes, ten years is a long time and your tastes might change, or you may have children and want a simple solitaire setting, or whatever.

Your ring is beautiful!

Thank you all three of you :) I guess I'm just a planner because I love jewellery and I like to know my options to change a piece if I need way ahead of time so there's at least an estimate of what I need to manage to save to fix it XD
This ring was actually a compromise of our tastes though. I actually begged for a solitaire because that's what I actually prefer. But he disagreed so I started looking for settings that were more ornate. If I upgrade this particular ring in the future he wants me to keep this setting as is. He'd like it to be the piece we pass down.
Thank you all again :) I'll try to just keep a file in the meantime and see how I feel later on :)

Pass this one down, get a totally new ring in ten years. He'll be your husband for a long time by then, and his thoughts about the ring will likely change. My husband was romantic about our original engagement ring for years, and then he got over it and let me trade it in toward another, totally different one shortly after our tenth anniversary. Your current ring is beautiful, and it wouldn't look as nice with a larger center stone.
