Hi,

I am relatively new to the forums and have been lurking a bit. I have a question about a diamond in a ring that I just bought. It is round diamond with a brilliant cut. On the diamond, the first edge from the bottom there is a distinct line on it. Right where the diamond was cut. I do not know how to describe it any better. If I need to post pictures I can try. Do you guys know if this is normal?

Thanks for your help.

Ditto Miss Ellen. Very normal!

Thanks for the replies. Actually I am not talking about that low on the diamond. The line I am talking about is actually on the edge where the diamond is cut. I am not sure if that part should be clear or not.

Do you mean the girdle - the sharp edge running around the diamond? Does it have a frosted appearance?

Yes, that is exactly what I am talking about. Is that ok if that is there?

All that means is that your girdle is unfaceted. It''s neither bad nor good, but more of a matter of preference. On many lower colored stones they leave it unfaceted because faceting can reflect some of the color back into the stone and make it face up with more color (someone please correct me if I''m off on this

).

I have a k with an unfaceted girdle and i love it :)

You've got it Robbie. An unfaceted, or bruted girdle is unpolished and has a frosted appearance. Some cutters believe polishing the girdle can cause color to be reflected back inside, so unfaceted girdles are common in J or K color grades and down, and in small goods, .25 and lower.

Nice prognosis, Lady Lorelei.

Thanks again for the replies. That does make me feel a little better. The diamond in question is a .73 carat diamond and is rated at F-G. It is also rated VS2. Would there be anyway to make this line go away if it is deemed unnecessary and she would like it gone or is it pretty much a done deal?

The girdle could be polished, but the diamond would have to be unmounted first (if it's set now), and the polishing will cause the girdle to wind up somewhat thicker which may not be desirable. The stone will also lose some weight. How thick is the girdle now, and is the diamond in a setting?

(I'd say it's not worth the trouble if she can make friends with it.)

The girdle is not very thick but it is already in a setting. Maybe she won't even notice but I need to be prepared in case she does. It sounds like it not worth the trouble though. I got this ring at a really good price and just wanted to make sure this is not why.

It''s normal, and I bet it probably won''t bother her.
