putting larger stone in existing mounting-question

Is there any way of knowing how much a head on a mounting or the prongs can be changed, tweaked or replaced to accomodate a larger stone. I may get a larger stone next year and I would love to be able to put it in my existing mounting but how much bigger can one realistically go????????

Not in that setting...

If anything can be done, it sounds like major surgery to me, close relative of a remake and better left to the original maker to take care of.

On a second thought, perhaps a diamond only very slightly larger and of the very same proportions could be set in higher and (allot) heavier prongs. But that would disfigure

the ring and... limit severely the choice of stones. I've seen that done to an antique ring and it really felt like a kick in the gut.

I wish someone will prove this wrong.
