Purple sapphire ; how would you describe the colour?

Hi,

I’m a complete noob when it comes to gemstone hues. I have fallen in love with this colour. It’s the blue in it ( shown in last pic ) that has really stolen my heart. It’s a heated purple sapphire from Madagascar listed as “ vivid purple.”

Is the blue a result of the lighting and in normal light, just purple? Or do you think it’s really that bluish? I have been trying to google bi colour , colour change as well as purplish blue and violet blue sapphires. I cannot find this colour.

If it’s just the lighting. Would the blue colour be a royal blue or cornflower blue?

I don’t care for the ring setting and would only buy it as a last resort, if the stone could be removed without damage?

I think it would look mostly purple in real life, though blue and purple stones can shift somewhat depending on the light. I have found that blues and purples don’t always show up true to color on computer screens. It’s best to buy from someone who has a great return policy.

If that’s the real color, it’s really saturated and pretty to me too! That’s a bezel setting, so I don’t think it’s easy at all to get the stone out.

Purple sapphires do have a blue component but it can vary according to the light source, plus those vendor photos might be colour “manipulated”. An vendor is going to use photos that “best” display their wares.
My purple sapphire is definitely purple but under LED it becomes far “bluer”.
The colour(s) of my sapphire in real life are different to how it photographs (just an iPhone) so I would buy from a vendor that accepts returns just in case you don’t like it “in person”

Hi Missy and Bron,

Yeah, I don’t think I can remove it out of the bezel. After seeing the photos of your purple sapphire, Bron and both your warnings about the colours in the photo / on screen. I have becomed paranoid now ( it’s good thing :)) and will try and inspect stones in person.

Thank you both for being such a huge help :)

I would have guessed Tanzanite in the first two photos. I think I'd want a cert if buying this stone at blue sapphire price.

In the small solitary image, straight on, I seem to detect a lot of color zoning and inclusions, which are missing the close-ups, all shot from an angle. Less than the color, that would make me nervous.
Either they have edited the inclusions out, or photographed only from an angle where you can't see the inclusions. Both is dishonest practice.

Hi prs and Anne,
In the listing is a GIA sapphire origin report, however there is no mention of the quality of the stone or inclusions like you see on other reports.
I wouldn’t have picked up on what you’ve pointed out, Anne. I have let go of wanting that stone. You guys are brilliant!
