Hi guys,
I have just purchased an elongated cushion cut and am looking to have it set. Does anyone know if it is okay to purchase a setting separately and have the diamond and setting put together locally? I spoke to a diamond seller who said they couldn't do this for a cushion cut because of the rounded edges. Has anyone had the same experience?
Alternatively, does anyone know any good jewellers in Melbourne that would set the diamond for me?
Thanks for your help!

I get how some jewellers say no when it comes to anything other than MRBs. If you find a cushion that is 1:1 ratio then it might be possible to get a setting to work with it but even then... It's more work for a jeweller sometimes and you'll end up paying for their trouble.

It's kinda like buying a wedding dress off the rack and hoping that you fit perfectly into it, or that an alteration shop can perform miracles.

Okay thanks!

Are you looking for the setter to also be the maker of the setting or a third party?
I’m not wholly convinced the answer about rounded edges rings true but I could see that a jeweller might not want to take the risk of setting a stone they’ve not sold in a setting which they don’t know will fit.

I was planning to get a third party jeweller to make a custom setting using the dimensions on the igi certicate, and then having another jeweller set the stone. What do you think? It is about $600 this way and its about $2000 to set it with a jeweller.

My concern would be the exact measurements of the angle of the stone where the pavilion tapers, angles of the crown, the diagonal lengths, and the rounded corners. If only going off the IGI certificate those things are not indicated in the way that jewellers generally measure them for settings and do need to be precise for a great and secure fit. The jeweller will likely not agree to liability with regards to fit if they are just going off the certificate instead of having the diamond to hand. And the setter might see the mount and decide it can’t be done or tell you they will make it work but whatever could be an issue. All in, depending on how significant this piece is to you, it may be too much of a risk and you might end up paying twice. On the other hand you might get lucky ☺️
