Hi all!

I've been a long-time lurker of this forum and now I finally have an account :wavey:

Anyway, I'm sure this happens to those of you who collect antique pieces, some are near-mint condition, but some need some loving in order to go back to their original splendor. This is a potential horror story about an antiquity I purchased, with a diamond at risk of breaking.

I'm a small-league collector of old cut diamonds in their original settings, so far I only have one bar brooch and one ring, but I'm very proud of both. I'm on a trip at the moment, so I had this ring sent to me and it arrived last week.

Both were online purchases, and the diamonds on the bar brooch are perfect. Some color on them, but no signs of wear.

The story with this ring is quite different. The setting is gorgeous, but the OEC center stone seems to be much older and... well... I adore old cuts, but it's obvious to the naked that the girdle is chipped in 3 places, the color is an H at best, and there are two cracks that I'm praying to the diamond gods are natural feather inclusions. One of the cracks runs along half the diamond and it makes it look cloudy on certain angles. The culet is on the larger side and way off-center. It's a .5 round-ish cut diamond.

I'm very worried about this stone. I've yet to have it professionally evaluated. I don't know of any jewellers in this country that deal with old cuts.

What would you guys do? I like to keep the pieces as true to their original state as possible, so I don't know how I feel about having the stone altered or replaced.

I'd love to hear your experiences/opinions on this. Thank you all!

Pics attached because of course.

The photos are tiny, but from what you say, the diamond sounds like a disaster. I'd return it.

Same. Not worth keeping.

Sorry for the cellphone pictures. I can't capture the cracks/chips with it.

Seems like I'm going to be looking for a .5 old cut diamond soon. Too bad
