This is a keratin-based relaxing treatment for ucontrollably frizzy/curly hair. This is not about preferring straight to curls. I don't have curls, I have a bird's nest on my head which, even when I use a ton of product and conditioning treatments and blowdry it with a rollerbrush, I still look as if I haven't brushed my hair. Even with tons of effort I look like a homeless person, and it's just not a good look for work. What drove me to hair straightening was not so much vanity as total embarrassment at how unkempt I looked All. The. time. Think Bob Geldof, even after tons of effort. My boss must think I just don't bother to brush my hair. Anyway:

Had it done in May. Fine, no problems. Hair looked a million times better.

Had it done again Friday. Slight redness round the hairline. Saturday, tight scalp and more redness round the hairlines. Sunday, great big red welts all round hairline, hives, lumps behind ears, horribly itchy scalp and tops of ears all crusty. I thought my forehead was swollen too, but maybe imagining it.

I used hydrocortisone on the redness and moisturized my scalp with a plain Aveda hydrating lotion.

Monday the redness and tight scalp was quite a bit better.

Tuesday, I wake up with a swollen ridged forehead like the Incredibly Hulk, and swelling of my right eye. Get to work, co-worker says left eye is swelling, too. Went to doc immediately, told me to get antihistamine. By 4pm, eyes were worse - lots of swelling across the bridge of my nose and my inner eyes. My eyelids also were weighed down with fluid, giving me a glimpse 30 years into the future when my eyelids have dropped. Eyes look half the size and swollen nose bridge makes me look like Davy Jones in Pirates of the Caribbean.

Fast-tracked through the ER and given steroids. Still on them, still swollen, but think I will be OK.

Why? The main ingredient is formaldehyde. Brazilian Blowout is meant to be free of it, but it's not - the solution turns into formaldehyde when the flat iron is applied. Turns out formaldehyde is a powerful sensitizer, so in some people, the first contact sensitizes you, and it's at the second contact that all hell breaks loose.

People have had much worse reactions, where their entire head swells and they are in hospital for days. I got lucky.

Be very careful of hair straightening treatments! It's worth noting that I'm a beauty product junkie, have been since I was 14, and I have never reacted to anything else, ever. Including dying my hair since I was 14. Sun-In and years of box color. So think on!

Oh, and also my voice is hoarse, even though I don't have a sore throat.

Redwood, Brazilian Blowout is actually one of the most, if not the most, gentle straightening treatment. The others all contain the same chemicals. You either react to the straighteners or you don't. I don't think many people react like me, but it came totally out of left field - I've never reacted to anything before.

Thanks for your reply. My eyes haven't gone down at all despite having been on the steroids for 24 hours. Hope it helps soon.

I see. Well I have had two so far but am due pretty soon. Makes me a little nervous.

I should think you'll be fine. Most people don't have a reaction like mine. The only scary thing is that you can become sensitized over time, so the two pieces of advice I have are 1) VERY IMPORTANT - impress upon the stylist that the solution must not touch your scalp or your skin, at least as little as possible. I actually found that my roots went too flat, and I had planned to have the stylist start it from 1/4 of an inch from my scalp to maintain a little root lift. You could do that. But for God's sake make sure it doesn't get on your skin. I think some got on my forehead. Take some wet wipes and wipe off any drop of solution that lands on your skin. You could also put Vaseline around your hairline. These measure will help avoid sensitizing over time.

Secondly, just try to string out the length between treatments. My first Brazilian Blowout lasted really well using this sulfate and sodium-free shampoo and conditioner, which I got from my local CVS: http://www.ulta.com/raw-shea-butter-moisture-retention-shampoo?productId=xlsImpprod6390367

I also bought some Batiste dry shampoo and washed my hair every 3-4 days.

These measures really helped my BB last for months.

Apparently, the chemical PPD in home box dye can also sensitize you over time, especially when you start young and use them a lot - both apply to me. The allergic reaction is very similar to the formaldehyde reaction. Now that I've seen what CAN happen, I think I might go to the salon for highlights/lowlights in future, as they don't touch your scalp. Quit while I'm ahead.

The stuff they use in all of them is highly toxic the old ones used to be worse but if you have sensitive skin you should avoid them. I have a really really thick hair that fuzzes up with humidity where I live. I bought a Dyson hairdryer the beginning of the year. It helps a lot.

I am sorry you are dealing with this!
Sending dust and well wishes!!!

Good grief, that sounds horrendous. Hope you'll be back to normal soon.

I thought this would be about bikini lines.

Aww Jambalaya, I am sorry you are going through such a horrible experience. Ugh! I hope your reaction goes completely away very soon and sending you healing vibes and hugs. I react to everything so I feel for you and hope you can find another way to deal with the hair. My hair has been (one of the) bane(s) of my existence for a very long time so I get you there too. What I do? On the days I cannot deal with it (most days LOL) I just smooth it back with humidity control gel from Ouidad and put it in a pony tail.

(((Hugs))).

Jambalaya, I'm so sorry you have been going through this and I hope you feel better, soon.
I feel like I've been on the hair journey all my life, trying to deal with my curly, frizzy hair.
I think I've considered every straightening system out there, but never took the plunge. My last hairdresser (just moved) tried and loved the Brazilin Keratin. THEN she learned about the health concerns and put the kibosh on it, as far as her offering the service. I did further research and never had it done.
Oh, I still wish for straighter, and as you said, easier to work hair, but as Missy said, gel and clips/elastics help me deal, especially now that I'm back in humid NJ.

My 18 year old daughter has amazing thick strong hair that is mostly straight but does like you said: tendency to frizz and ball up, looking like she doesn't brush her hair.

So last year I brought her for a straightener, BBO, and I made her wear a mask. She had so much breakage it was unreal. After it washed out we talked about it and were both too freaked out at the damage from her strong, thick hair that we both agreed, never again.

I bought her a heat brush from dermatore and it works wonders. Let me find a link. It is super fast too.

When I call a salon, I ask if they do the Brazilian blowouts. If they do, I don't go there because I don't want to be dragging an oxygen tank around later on. Very toxic fumes involved.

Jambie, I hope you're 100% soon!!!

I would get living labs lypospheric vitamin c asap and take initial 4g, followed by 2g every 4 hours until you improve. It really helps with an autoimmune response.

*livon labs not living.

I hate to make light of your situation but your analogies had me cracking up. "like Davy Jones.."..lol

I hope the symptoms clear up quickly. I thought about having this done (I'm in the rat's nest club) but I never went through with it. Thank goodness because my skin reacts to everything. I actually had a horrible reaction to a face mask once and my entire face was red and covered with very noticeable bumps. Makeup was not covering that baby. :confused2:

Im sorry you had this experience @Jambalaya I was at the salon when they were giving someone a Brazilian blowout. I could not breathe and my throat felt awful for hours after I left the salon. I told my stylist if there is one scheduled in the future On the day I have an appointment, please call me so I can reschedule my appointment. The salon I go to quit offering this process. Apparently other stylists and their customers had the same reaction I had. I was told the salon spent extra money for proper ventilation but it didn't stop people having adverse reactions.

Everyone, thank you so, so much for the suggestions and the good wishes. I'm very tired from not being able to sleep that well on steroids, and also my poor little face is all puffy now from water retention from the steroids. I look a bit Phantom of the Opera today, more swollen on one side. So I won't reply individually if you don't mind, just going to do pajamas and rest, but I am really, really, really grateful for each reply and suggestion.
