100k isnt even remotely a high income where we are DF...you know that!

also if people start telling us what size their homes are, how does that other poll remain anonymous if you try to start matching up people with the size of their homes to their income levels...

new question please!

Well this depends on where you live. I own a 2 bedroom 2 bath 1200 square foot apartment in Manhattan. Anywhere else in the country I''d be living in one heck of a big house..(lol)

I live in a 2000+ square foot home here in the midwest, and I am only living on a teacher's salary (times 2 with my fiance's income). If I lived in NYC, I would probably be living in a cardboard box. Needless to say, this is a strange question that is difficult to answer (and evaluate). It's WHERE you live and what your square footage is that matters. They really go hand in hand, IMO.

We are over 100k. Square footage of my house is 2400. We could have afforded larger but wanted to keep our mortgage under $1000 a month. We live in NC

Wow. We pay $400 more a month for something less than half your size. We live in Los Angeles, CA, though.

Our house sold in 1997 for 178k. We put $55k down on it. We''ve done about 30k worth of improvements. The house is now worth about 270k. We have three kids to take care of and college educate some day so we want our expenses low to make sure we can do that and retire well. Back to the 2 carat diamond thread-- it''s all relative to what your priorities are and what your other financial obligations are.

Aww DF you lack subtly! You ought to have asked how many BR or fireplaces people have.

That is what sororities do when they want to know how large your house is without being direct and just asking.

I''d love a 2400 sqft home, and I''d move to NC to get it. Alas, my fiance, the aspiring TV writer, needs to be here. It doesn''t hurt me to be here either, as I want to be a copywriter for an ad agency.

The house we are going to build is 3410sq feet, not including a finished basement. I got 20acres in Northern VA as a graduation gift from my parents though, so that definitely helped! I just can't wait till we can start building!

ETA: 5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, and 2 fireplaces!

Doesn't it also depend on when you got the home? I know DH got the house back in 2001 and now the house is appraised for almost double what it was. I don't know the sq footage of the house. It has 4 br, 3 bath, and we are under 100K as we only have one income right now. Hopefully not for too long though.

ETA: we are in L.A. area. I asked DH and found out our house is 2700 sq ft (it's 2 stories).

It''s so tempting thinking about moving to a place like NC where $350k or similar buys you a 3000 sq ft home. We could pay cash for it. Oh well CA has great weather.

Our townhouse is 1850 sq ft, 3/3 and 1 fireplace...hehehee.

Less than 2,000 sq ft. It''s adequate and we are happy.

Ha ha, Dancing Fire, I''ll bite! I "only" have a 1.5c diamond, and hubby and I make a combined salary in the mid $100,000 range. Our house (first one we have purchased 2 years ago as newlyweds, he was 33 and I was 26 then) was built in 1948, but it is tiny! So tiny that the square footage wasn''t even listed (unless it was in the fine print!) I''m guessing it''s somewhere between 1200-1600 square feet...but I could be wrong. I grew up in a 6,000 square foot house in southern IN, so anything less than that seems tiny to me, lol! My parents still live there, but are planning to sell their house in the next few years for about what we will get for ours here in the west suburbs of Chicago!!! That is just how relative this issue really is.

When I first moved up here to be with my now-husband, I thought the price of real estate was just sick. I did not understand why I was going to have to work my butt off to buy a home that would fit inside my parents'' garage! But you know, there''s something to be said for a small home, and that is, "you can clean it in about 4 hours by yourself, top to bottom!!!"

Would I love to have a 2+carat diamond in a few years, along with with a home that is about twice the square footage we have now? Oh yes, I would! Realistically, I will never own a home with my husband that is more than probably 3500-4000 square feet, though, and I''m totally fine with that.

1300 sq ft loft in Soho, Manhattan. We bought it last year and have renovated it entirely. New floors, Boffi kitchen, Viking stove blah, blah, blah...

Next year, we're planning to move into something around 1800 sq ft but I can't ever imagine needing more space than that.

Combined income around $350k, but I'm an artist and barely count

hahaha don''t encourage me Tacori! i love looking at all the new houses online over in NC...so tempting but no one i know is out there and my family is all here. Greg would like to move back East but I just think I''d die being away from everyone else that I love. Tough call!

Oh and ursula, trust me you fill up square footage fast!! we moved from a 1200 sq ft place to here (1850) and that was 2 years ago, the other day Greg told me our storage under the house (the whole house space underneath!!) was almost full.

And it''s just the two of us and our rat (Portia)...but I love to collect home decor stuff for seasons and this and that and he has all his car hobby stuff, yikes!

And 350K in No VA will buy you a condo and our weather is a little cooler than NC. Even townhouses are all over 400K now and single family homes (detached) average over 600K (2000sq ft). A million+ will get you 4000 sq ft. Our value has gone up around 35% in 2 years.

Our last house before the one we''re in now, we bought in''95 for 210K and we sold it in ''03 for 425K. The people who bought it from us sold in ''05 for 620K. That''s the nature of the beast around here. But, that''s where demographics come in. Incomes support it and the unemployment rate here is considered to really be zero. There are more jobs than people. Income alone does not tell the whole story.

My 1000 sq foot house is worth about $400,000 (luckily I bought it for a LOT less). I live on a teacher''s salary here in California and cannot afford to move in anywhere in my town!

My parents'' one bathroom, 3 bedroom ranch in a wealthier suburb of boston sold for over half a million when they decided to move out of that town (and the house was SMALL, small kitchen, living room, den and porch and that''s about it)...funny thing is that for less they now have a 4 bedroom 2 full bath house....after both my brother and I have moved out--I could have used that extra bathroom back in highschool!!!

Wow. I''m jealous of all the sq footage you all have! I''d LOVE a mortgage of less than 1K but that''s impossible here in the bay area! I think I win for smallest place. My condo is 950 sq feet! 2 bed/1 bath/1 fireplace. And I probably paid more than most of you for your huge places!
