Proposing in NYC, I need an intimate restaurant in UWS

Hi all,

I am brand new here so my apologies if I commit any forum faux pas here. I am going to NYC next month and staying in the upper west side. I am planning on popping the question while there, and while I am not going to do the actual proposal in a restaurant, having a dinner together that exactly what my girlfriend loves prior to the proposal is very important to me. She loves a very intimate romantic restaurant, much more over something that is supper upscale and stiff. I'm thinking candle lights, something rustic perhaps. We'll be dressed up for the evening so not something casual, but the ambience is far more important than what everyone else will be wearing around us.

She loves pretty much any type of food so that is not a tough criteria. For what it's worth we are going to be eating at Sardi's the night before since we're going to a broadway show. I only mention that as she is the type of girl who would not want to eat the same type of food two nights in row.

Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much in advance and I'm happy to join your forum.

This used to be *the* romantic eatery in NYC, not sure how it stands currently. But it's not UWS ... http://www.oneifbyland.com/hometest.html. The views from River Cafe in Brooklyn are amazing. I can't think of a ton of UWS places that scream *romantic* to me. Hmmmm.

ETA: Okay, what about Per Se ... http://www.yelp.com/biz/per-se-new-york

ETA: What you're describing ... rustic, candlelit, not stuffy -- is much more common in the Village, Chelsea, Tribeca or Flatiron. It's a tough find uptown but hopefully a current local will weigh in with some new choice I don't know of!

UWS local here. I can't really think of many romantic restaurants on the UWS. If you don't mind taking a cab up to the Columbia University area, I'd recommend those two.

Service is good, food is amazing! They have a great wine list as well.

Casual, but kind of romantic.

I'd recommend stopping by at Cafe Lalo at some point. I'm sure your girlfriend will love it.

Thanks for the replies so far. Can you guys give any thoughts on Barcibo Enoteca? I can't tell if it's too casual. Was also initially looking at dovetail or asiate but I'm thinking those are going to be too stuffy for what she likes.

I don't think dovetail is a romantic restaurant. Barcibo does serve small bites, but its' more of a bar. You might find the after-work crowd noisy and annoying. I've never been Asiate, so cannot comment on that.

I'm going to leave one more suggestion here.

Have you checked out per sa as deco suggested?

I second the Jean-Georges recommendation!!!

For UWS Picholine is also very lovely. Forget Per Se as you need a 2 month wait for a reservation and from your post I gather you are doing this next month.

Please check into Jean-Georges as well. The main dining room is really intimate and romantic IMO. Good luck!!!!

I also vote for Jean-Georges. And book a room overlooking Central Park in that Trump hotel on the same property, great views from the floor-to-ceiling windows.

I agree that the best intimate restaurants are going to be further downtown, like West Village. You shouldn't feel limited to UWS just because you are staying there - it is a quick 20 minute subway ride downtown and the winding streets in the village would make for a nice post-dinner stroll. My personal rec would be Mas Farmhouse - amazing food, intimate atmosphere, not too expensive (4 courses $78).
