Proper Measurements for a Square Cut

Hello,

Does anyone know how close the length/width measurements need to be for the stone to be considered a square? Is there a standard where beyond a certain point (like a length/width difference of .2, for instance) a stone is considered a rectangle, not a square?

Someone here told me anything over a 1-to-1.04 ratio isn't considered square. So that's what I go by.

On a GIA Report if the length/width ratio exceeds 1.05:1 (like even if it's 1.051:1) then it is listed as a rectangular brilliant instead of square. So technically you can go to 1.05:1. There are many though who would consider 1.06 and 1.07:1 ratios to be considerably square though too. On our finders form (contact us button at top) we have a program called a "shape selector" where you can use a slider scale to see what these ratios look like on a princess cut to help you decide what are and aren't acceptable ratios for you personally.

I have a 1.06 and I will be the first to say it is NOT square, it is squareISH... From what I have notcied, searching desperately for a SQUARE stone, go with 1.04 or less.
