"Proper" daily wearing of your E-ring?

I'm in the DC area and wear my 2.39 all the time. I take it off to shower, otherwise it is on 24/7. Okay, one more exception - I travel a lot for work and if I am going somewhere that i am nervous about and I will be alone, sometimes I leave it at home and use my eternity band instead. I say wear it - I figure it was expensive so I want "my money's worth" - it's insured, and besides I LOVE my ring, so why not?!

When we were first engaged, I took it off for everything -- showers, doing my hair, hand lotion, washing my hands, etc.

A year later, I never take it off. Unless I am trying on wedding bands or having it checked and cleaned, or on the occasions where it is cold and it starts threatening to drop off. When gardening season starts up in a little bit, I''ll probably take it off for that too. Otherwise it just never comes off.

Of course, it is "only" a 1ct, and we live and work in a safe friendly area. If I were going to visit a friend down south in a scary-ish part of LA for example, I''d might consider taking it off, or flipping it around. But otherwise, what is the point of spending so much money on a symbol of eternal affection if it''s not going to be worn half the time?

In your position, I might compromise with the fiance and just flip it around so only the band shows while you''re commuting, if he is really that ocd about it. And get it insured.

I wear mine almost all the time. I take it off right before I get in the shower, put it in a jar of cleaning solution, then clean it and put it back on after I''m done applying lotion and hair products. I don''t take it off to sleep, work out, swim, or clean (my DH deals with the harsh chemicals). It doesn''t appear to be too worn, but if it starts to look that way, I''ll get it repolished.

I wear my ring practically all the time. I do not wear it while sleeping, showering, or doing heavy duty chores. The minute I wake up it is on my finger, and it''s the last thing I take off at night. I get a lot of joy looking at it, and I will never tire of it. It goes everywhere with me, even when I travel - and we travel a lot. When I travel, I leave it in a bowl on the night stand next to the bed. At home, I have ring holders beside the sinks and on my night stand. I feel it is safer on my hand than anywhere else. I would feel naked if I were to leave the house without my earrings and rings!


I clean my rings every day, usually with some type of jewelry solution and a soft baby toothbrush. I also use my Sharper Image ultrasonic and Jewel Jet quite often. Besides a few scratches on the bottom of my ring, it still looks like new with no hint of platinum patina yet.


My sister is not allowed to wear her wedding ring, and she''s been married nearly twenty-three years (we got married six months apart). It sits in a safe. It''s not like they can''t afford a replacement if something should happen, as they are very, very well off financially.I feel sorry for her...


I hope that you both come to a reasonable decision.

that is such a shame venice! Sometimes I wonder who these rings are for... some people put them on and never think about them again and they get gunked up and they don''t care - they were expected to have them and they got them and its done. Seems like your sister is in a similar situation where it was expected she get a ring but then isn''t allowed to wear it - why have it at all? Get something smaller you CAN wear. Some people only put them on when they go out and that makes me wonder if it''s just something to flaunt - to show to others more than to enjoy for yourself... like the enjoyment of the thing is primarily from the reactions of others. Then there are others yet who obsessively look at them and clean them and wear them even more when no one else is around... to me that is a true diamond lover

I take my ring off when I shower (mostly because the grate over the drain looks to me like it could be wide enough for my ring to slip through), washing up, cooking, gardening and cleaning. The thought of it getting covered in dirt, meat, onion juice, etc really annoys me and even when I''m wearing gloves it annoys me wearing it under.

My mother on the other hand hasn''t taken her rings off for so long that she can''t get them over her knuckle anymore.

Imo, turning your e-ring around so the stone isn''t visible isn''t going to fool the thieves. It might even be more tempting. Keep yourself in safe settings so opportunity doesn''t present itself. Jmo.

Cleaning - I''ve been reading old threads and don''t feel I want to chance the harsh affect of sudsy ammonia on the metals. Occasionally should be all right.

I''ve decided to try washing with a shampoo like Neutrogena that known for taking off the excess build up in your hair. The Fillbert art brush for tiny areas seems like a soft, natural type to use.

The vendor for for present e-ring said to soak & wash in a mild dish detergent. Using tweezers and a piece of muslim or soft cotton to hold the ring, hold in the steam of a kettle - not the direct steam. Put back in the sudsy solution, soak and repeat this process until shiney. This does work but I admit to putting off more often than I should.

Usually I cheat and do the soaking in the jewellery cleaner solution I bought at W-M. I was thinking my rings were clean. My wedding band is a plain 18 K YG. Last time after doing the soaking thing, I decided to give it a rub with the dry wipes they have. I kept removing layers of black onto the cloth. I was really shocked.

Lol!! I'm afraid to drive with it on when I get mine in case I'm so entranced by it I drive my car straight off the road! Or that I would get absolutely NO work done at my job because I'm just too distracted and staring at my ring all day at my desk. Gollum-esque behavior is unavoidable!

When I was engaged I wore my ering all the time even sleeping and excerising, but now that I''m married I occasionally leave it at home and just wear my wedding bands. I ride the subway in NYC all the time and I''ve never had a problem.

I clean it 1-3 times a week as needed with just soap, water and a toothbrush - and my ring is not insured.

I live in the DC area and commute via public transportation downtown for work. I''ve never felt unsafe wearing my rings but I don''t have a particularly large set. Some of my friends do though, and they don''t worry about it either.

I don''t think I would either, I''ve seen some HUGE rocks on other women riding the Marc Trains as well as the metro subway cars. It''s just that I''m often coming and going very early or late when it''s dark and not that many people out. And my closest metro station has the highest crime rate for all dc/md/va metro stations and the closest train station I''m near is next door to a prison... I usually get off at another stop further away because the train conductors have actually advised me not to wait for a ride there. While my diamond won''t be all too large, he''s a worrier since I''m so petite

I can see why your FI would be worried then! I would try to find a better way to commute to work that does not sound safe at all

I wear mine to work during the day but take it off as soon as I get home. I don''t wear it around the house or when I am cleaning, showering, or sleeping. I wear it whenever I leave the house, except to the gym. When I get my wedding band I will probably wear the e-ring less since I work in a lab and my ring gets knocked around a lot.

i live in philly and constantly walk around and ride public transit. my ring isn''t huge by PS or downtown standards, but it is in a high setting that makes it look bigger than it is. if i am by myself at night or in a not-so-nice part of town i will sometimes spin my ring so the stone isn''t visible or stick my hand in my pocket. more than half the year i''m wearing gloves anyway. normally i don''t think much about it. i feel like in most of the places where the ring would make me a target so would a nice bag or shoes -- the ring is way less visible.

i don''t wear it when i do dishes or other dirty work unless i''m wearing gloves.

i sometimes (but not always) take it off when i go to art class -- if i used oil paint i would probably take it off every time but i don''t normally use anything that would damage it.

i sometimes take it off as soon as i get home in the summer because i get sausage fingers...

i sometimes take it off if i have to visit heavy industrial sites for work (the thought of having my ring come off in a pitch-black coal mine was horrifying...)

other than that i take it off at night (my setting is way to high to wear it 24/7 -- i''d gouge my eye out in my sleep!) generally i don''t think people wear their rings to bed and i wouldn''t recommend it unless maybe you have a low-set bezel. just too much chance for prongs to catch or scratch.

I wear mine pretty much 24/7. I know me and my biggest risk is losing it because I took it off and put it somewhere ''safe''. (I''ve done that with lots of jewelry in the past, luckily nothing but costume but I a HUGE loser of stuff!)


When I am, say, walking around downtown at night I flip it around to hide the stone in my palm.


The only times I take it off are when I travel out of the US and when I clean it. I''m fairly easy on my hands so it''s not a huge deal. I keep it on to cook and clean- I''d prefer to have to clean it afterwards than to risk absentmindedly taking it off in the kitchen, which I know I could do.

I''m very absent-minded...not to mention we have a mischievous cat who loooves to knock things off the counter, desk, bedside table...she''s such a little punk lol. She does it when she thinks we''re not looking, watches the item fall with a gleeful expression...if we turn our heads to her at the sound of the item falling, she looks at us cheerfully and puffs her fluffy chest and murrffles at us...she sure knows how to work the cute!

No, it''s not religious - it''s called "control." Their marriage is 98% "control." I could write a book but nobody would believe it. No one would ever know they are multi-millionaires...

I wear my engagement ring most of the time and just take it off for sailing or other sports where it might get banged around. I''m pretty rough on my rings, but they''ve survived so far despite my engagement ring having Leon''s gorgeous double claw prongs.

I am pretty obsessive about cleaning though and usually ultrasonic my diamond rings and earrings daily with a mix of hot water, vodka and windex. Most of my jewellery is platinum so no need to worry about discolouration!

I''m hoping to get a thin pave eternity band (approx 1.5mm) for our 5th wedding anniversary in October. I''ll wear this below my knife edge wedding band so it should be protected. My wedding band sits higher than my engagement ring and so this gives a bit of protection on the palm side which is where my rings get most wear.

If you want your rings to last a lifetime, it is a good idea to take good care of them. For me, that means wearing them mostly when I leave the house. I do not wear them when working in the house, showering, or when I sleep. As a result my rings still are in excellent condition.

it can be a little distracting while you''re driving - but you probably have a lot more to fear being honked at to GO at stoplights

I only wear mine when I leave the house and never to work. I work in healthcare and even though I wear gloves and other personal protective gear I do not want to be bringing anything home in my jewelry, including earrings.

My first ering I wore 24/7. I do think there is a newlywed syndrome and my ring paid the price. After the first 8 years the ring was unwearable and it set in my jewelry box (for about 4 years) until I had it reset. I am now much more careful.

Also, I do not place sentimental value on my jewelry. I in no way feel that it is a representation of my marriage or that I need to wear it to identify my status to others. In fact, I tend to get hit on more when i have it on

!

Sure I would be sad if I lost it or it was stolen, but I think I would be more excited about creating a new one
